Default "Garlic: Hazardous or Healthful"

Dr.Tina Wismer discusss the topic of garlic and dogs. The link to the podcast is below and is audible through your computer:

"Garlic: Hazardous or Healthy for My Pet?
When it comes to giving human foods to pets, there seems to be a consensus on the risk of some foods or ingredients—like chocolate, grapes, and the artificial sweetener Xylitol—but some disagreement on others. Garlic, for example, is often considered to be hazardous to pets, but some believe that garlic is beneficial in moderation, either to boost the pet’s immune system or as an anti-flea treatment. In this podcast, Dr. Tina Wismer, senior director of veterinary outreach and education at the ASPCA’s Poison Control Center, talks about garlic and pets."

Interesting link Janice and thanks. I have read that garlic is poisonous to pets then so many I know give their dogs garlic for flea control. Your link has cleared up that question.

Good to hear the confirmation that it's quantity that counts since garlic and onions are the two most used food groups... in this house!!

I pick out the bigger pieces of onion from the leftovers but if I didn't give MacKenzie ANY food that had been near garlic or onions he'd be one disappointed pooch!

Great Article Janice I have also known for some time that's it's the quantity you give. You just have to be careful and use common sense!
And still no 100% proof that it helps flea control. But I will continue to use garlic for this purpose

Is a small clove of garlic a day too much?

Years ago when we had a Great Pyranees, he came from a family who fed their dogs an all natural, raw diet and they used garlic for fleas. We continued it with our Georges, and it didn't cause him any problem. We put it in his food, but it's been so long ago, I don't remember the quantity.

Probably and have you read Janice's article?
If too much is given it can be toxic!!! You can buy Bugoff garlic powder which you can use sparingly in the dogs food.

it's all in the quantity that's given I use garlic capsules 75mg so that's a small quantity and it's given every 3 months And when Nipper does have a bath no fleas are on the surface of the water!!
