Default Can you tell me what kind of dog I have?

Hello all, I got my dog last May (2010) at the local animal shelter. The vet told me he is probably a border collie or Australian shepherd. However, he is on the small side (about 32 pounds) and he has a very mellow temperament. He is extremely obedient and non-demanding, and also very loving, really the perfect pet. I was looking online and found some info on English shepherds. Does anyone think he could be this breed instead? He does not do the border collie "drop" although he has herding instincts because he runs circles around us when we take him off leash.

Welcome to df dunsere! I can't tell too well from the photo. Looks like at least some border collie in there!

Here is what he looks like with his ears perked up. A few other things: he will not catch anything in his mouth and does not like to chew on hard toys like nylabones. He likes to chew small stuffed animals, but will not destroy them. He was picked up as a stray (I live in north Fla.) and was obviously someone's pet. Just wondering about his background because I can't imagine anyone dumping him off somewhere (as happens quite frequently around here.)

reminds me a bit of my daughter's stray she adopted. she turned out to be, of all things, a chow chow/australian shepherd mix. she looked like a BC! That curled tail on your baby is mighty curious to me.

coat sure looks like English shepherd though.

Some type of collie in there (rough coated, border, english, farm,...). The coloring reminds me of possible spaniel or hound. The personality sounds like a bit of collie and spaniel. My guess is: the best dog x pretty dog.

What a smashing little dog. Those colourings are of a Burnese Mountain Dog......right down to the tan bits on his face! Maybe he has some Burnese in with the collie mix. But he is rather small for that.

He's a charmer, whatever.

EDIT - ooh, actually just looked up the English Shepherd.....I think KCat was right, he's more English Shepherd than anything!!

xx

CurlySue, funny you should mention Bernese Mountain Dog. When they had him at the shelter, that's what he was listed as. But I figured he couldn't possibly be that breed, because Bernese Mountains weigh over 100 pounds. KCat, I've considered that too ... maybe just a mix of different breeds. I guess I'll never know, but I think I got lucky with this dog.

yeah - to get such a good temperament is always a plus.

my daughters dog given the cross she is, I would never have guessed would turn out such a well-behaved dog. She is very high energy but she's so good. She does need a lot of exercise (fortunately, so does my son-in-law) but with Chow chow and Australian shepherd I expected some "issues" and she's just an amazing animal. Gypsy loves to race at high speeds around my SIL and play this game of pretending to race toward him then veer off at the last minute. My Sheltie did this when I was kid. I'd guess that basic shepherd instinct. fun stuff.

A cross of a cross of a cross.

The black and tan coloring could come from any dog. it's a dominant gene and could be carried down from any cross for generations. As most dogs in the world are crosses, I suspect he's not recently mixed with anything pure. And, of course, there's nothing wrong with that. He's a cutie.
