Hi Kris,
Your experience with Chloe mirrors mine with Carli! We adopted Carli a year ago. I wasn't looking for a Chihuahua but fell in love at first site. They said she was 2 years and potty trained but she wasn't. She acted more like she was one without any training at all. Like Chloe she was scared of everything. They think she was abused by the way she cowers at anyone reaching for her or wanting to pick her up. She is scared of the dark. Pretty jumpy at anything that moves. She has come a long way. A little at a time. She's a funny little thing. Quirky we call it. ![]() We got Carli to be a companion with my Jack Russell/Chihuahua. She attached herself to him from day one. With training once she gets it she's got it down. She gets very excited to "Play" which means doing her tricks. She now knows sit, sit up, lay down, roll over, twirl around, leave it, stay and come. We are a part of a play group and she and Buddy, my Jack, won a prize for best synchronized tricks! She is loves her walks and walks great on a harness. Funny, she will act like she is a sleep all the while you are getting her ready for her walk but once ready to go she loves it. She is completely potty trained. The first day she was here she was following Buddy outside thru the doggy door and it came back and hit her in the head. Well there went that idea for a while! We worked on potty training the same way you would do any puppy. Now she lets me know when she wants to go out. She uses the doggy door but if I'm here comes and gets me. I guess to watch? She was very scared of the dark. I still have to walk outside sometimes to say "it's okay", yes I talk to my dogs, and keep her outside until she goes. Usually if the winds up or raining. She is now going up to people to let them pet her. She is very scared of kids. Last week she let a little boy from our group pet her. She went up to him which is the way anyone gets to touch. A milestone! She sleeps in our bed with us and during the day. She does like to be laying next to Buddy when ever possible. When she came to us she ate like she was starving! I have had her on a diet after she blossoned to 11 lbs from 7.5. Her treats are carrots and she wants one every time she goes out to potty. Anyway, don't give up on Chloe. Carli has brought so much love and laughter to our home that I can't imagine not having her! She may never be as outgoing as Buddy around people but I really think that is part of her personality. Best wishes and I look forward to hearing how you are doing with her!
