Her name is Prudence!!! Prudy for short.

She won't walk when wearing her new coat! She just stands there and looks at me like i'm an idiot.

Took her to the groomers yesterday so they could be the "bad people" to cut her nails- it took two groomers to hold her and one to cut the nails- and she screamed so loud everyone in the pet store could hear her through the glass... She can be a bit temperamental...

Also, I caught her playing with the other dogs when I was out of the room...I peaked around the corner and there she was, bouncing around them, wagging her tail. But when I walked into the room, she froze, started trembling, and acted like they had kidnapped her! So silly.

Kris, it will take time before she's ok with the nails being clipped. Apparently she wasn't well cared for beofre, so nail clipping is new to her. Scooter hates his nails clipped. I take him to the pet store and it takes 2 people to do him too. Go figure, I have no problem grooming and clipping nails for my Collies, but forget the little pint size dog.
Too funny about her playing with the other dogs. It sounds like she is really adjusting well to you and your dogs. Give Prudy a hug from all of us!

Looks like maybe in the past she may have been told off for playing with other dogs as she was ok till you walked in the room ( the assocaition thing kicked in again) so why not try and play with her to get her confidence back in people even if means getting on the floor with her and have toy in your hand and get her intrested in it and you
Re the coat problem well I would suggest that you don't pick her up when trying to get her out on walks other wise she will expect it all the time just keep calm and happy and eventually she will come round
Give her a gentle hug from me and my girl too! xxx

Prudence update!!

Prudy has gotten very good about her schedule and has had few accidents in the house. She's still in shock about being treated like a real dog. We took her to the pumpkin patch to pick our pumpkin and made her walk- really didn't like it! Also hates her front clip harness, I don't think it fits her quite right because she is so small, so I'm getting a regular harness now.

A few things:

There are some things that have happened all at once and I'm trying to sort it out. We had a cold weather front come through about the same time Prudy started acting weird. She would be curling up on her bed, or just standing there (in other words, not jumping or anything crazy) and would just start yelping in pain and run to her kennel! No one touching her, dogs not playing, anything. Because this started right when the weather front came through, I think it's joint pain. She exaggerates a bit so it's hard to tell how much it's bothering her. I had started her on a glucosamine/ chondrotin/MSM supplement when I first got her since cherry eye is an indication of weak connective tissue. She hasn't been on it long enough to take effect. Does anyone else with Chi's have a problem with something like this? Would giving her dog asprin help at all?

Also, instead of snuggling with me on the couch, she want to hide under the bed all the time now. Because of pain, or because of pack changes (See other post, had to have a dog put to sleep, and another dog is on crate rest, so that leaves a very annoying Border collie with no one to play with and Prudence) I'm not sure. I really don't like her hanging out under the bed- I got used to her snuggling with me!!

So, a lot of changes, don't know how to sort it. She seems more scared, like she is closing up again just when I thought she was coming out of her shell. I'm not sure how to get her to be more confident. She was REALLY scared of my partner for awhile because whenever she was in pain, it happened to be when he was around, so she thought he did it. With lots of treats, we overcame the worst of that. Also, playdate scheduled next week with someone with a toy Pomeranian.

We have started clicker training. Pru is VERY food motivated and is responding nicely. But when we're done, she just goes back under the bed

Kris, you may want to take Prudy to the vet just to make sure she is medically sound. If she's ok, it could be she's hiding under the bed because of the loss of one of your dogs. Dogs go through a mourning process, just like people do. She was getting used to your other dogs and was starting to play with them. Now one is gone, and the other is on crate rest. It may be upsetting to her.

first of I bow that you helped a and saved a dog.. I have a 2 year old chihuahua princess. Chihauhuas are very shy dogs. Princess would not go near any person at the park or dog. But once she gets to know you she is so loving. My uncle who came from greece and stayed with us for a few days.. at first she didnt want to do anything with him. she would Run off in the room. But then a few days she got used to him and sat with him on the couch. They do adapt it just takes time and patients and praises. As for outside.. You have to understand a tiny dog in a huge world. IT is scary for them. Princess still gets scared of loud noise ect and i had her as a puppy. but she has gotten better. As for the house rules they learn really fast. THEY ARE SOOOOO SMART!!! I take princess to agility and she is the smartest fasted learner from the big dogs the teacher said. I dress my dog as every one here knows, she does have bags but i only use it when i take her on bus or the stores if they dont allow dogs but i treat her as a dog as well. she does agility, dog classes ect.. My advice is give her time and a chance to adapt to her new world she will come along. LOTS OF PRAISES AND PATIENTS!! Thanks for adopting

Oh i didnt read there was an update..

Glad she is getting better which i knew she would. She will come around and would love going for a walk. Try giving her a VERY SMALL treat after every walk when its done.. So she can says wow i get a treat after a walk let me walk some more )) that will encourage her to walk more.. chihuahuas can be stubborn at times if they dont like something they show it. But keep at it they can change there mind. I mostly use a harness for princess or a collar..

This is kinda what i use.

A little tip when going outside you can get something like this...
Thundershirt | The Best Dog Anxiety Treatment
It does help. I never got this but when i wear clothes to princess when we go out for a walk when its chilly ourside she does feel less scared then when she has no clothes on. I have notice that. So maybe you can get her a little coat or a shirt or something and try it.

As for winter cold night chihuahuas LOVEEEEEEEEEE to cuddle under a blanket or to be warm. They like HOT. They liek to stay in the sun for HOURS and even if they get a a sun stroke. They are mexican dogs and its always hot there. They dont like the cold. Does yours have long hair? princess has short hair. And if i dont wear her any shirt she shakes at winter time. (we got cold snow weathers)

IT does sound joint problem. I had a a 15 year old lhasa apso who would do that. The vet gave me pills to give him everyday.. He would cry in the night from the pain Maybe she has problems since she does not walk much.. try massaging her legs. Also if you have a treadmill at home let her go on it everyday for 5 min and when she used to it more. IT helps. Also run in the yard or around the house.. Im not sure for aspirin its best to ask the vet before giving anything that might not be it.

Try putting her bed on your bed and see if that helps. Also under your bed the floor is cool so maybe it makes her bones feel better. but im shocked she does not sleep with u because ALL chihuahuas likes to sleep under warm covers. in fact its 4.47 am now and princess is under the covers on my bed on my legs sleeping lol Have you try crate training her? chihuahuas like closed areas and she would love her crate. princess loves her crate. just add a bed and blankets to the crate.
ITs always good to have dogs, kids, adults interact with the chi. I always have other dogs come over also kids to play with princess and get her used to it. Just keep doing what your doing and she will come around. It takes time for a chihuahua but she is smart if she really wants to learn.
Clicker training is FUN! That what i use to train princess and she knows TONS of tricks ect.. Try closing the door to the room. she just need to get motivated learn that she cant always be on her own. Try buying motivated toys like kongs or toys that they need to move or pull to get a treat. chihuahuas LOVE treats and they will do anything for it. They dont like change and are very stubborn dogs but once you make then realize they need to change and for the bets they will learn FAST. When if first got princess i used puppy pads but that didnt work well so i started to take her out and then i had a hard time finding out when she wants to go out so i trained her to RING THE BELL and now she rings the bells to let me know she wants to go out They are smart VERY SMART does when they want to learn something. Keep at it. always motivate your dog. IF she goes for a walk use the clicker Click and TREAT!! she will enjoy walks more. bring her a toy play it outside. Chi LOVE STUFF ANIMALS! Hope all this helps. keep at it. Good luck.

My new toy poodle at first when i put her a new coat on she would not move and just stand there as well. Keep putting it on an she will learn..

HAHAHAH that is a chihuahua for you they are so stubborn, they dont like adjusting to new things, they dont like to be told what to do, they like to do there own thing at times, They act so innocent but there not, but they are so smart and easy to learn if they want to..

as for the dogs playing issue she might think that u will yell at her for playing with other dogs. If you see her play with the other dogs CLICK TREAT.. Try sitting with all the dogs and take out a STUFF ANIMAL and play with them all and see what happens. play tug of war with them or hide treats and let them find it. Find out which is her fav toy and take that toy out ONLY when she plays with the other dogs.

I just saw her picture SOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTEEEEE!!!!
