Exclamation Is this dog really a pure pomeranian? [PIC]

Hi all,

I have been looking around for a Pomeranian forever around the Ottawa area, there seems to be very little options.

I came across this ad: http://www.usedottawa.com/classified-ad/9578478

Does this look like a pure Pomeranian to you? The tail is giving me doubts .

Thanks in advance.

Hi KikiTwist and welcome to the forum.
Looks like a Pom to me. I know how hard it can be to find a purebred dog, but I'd be really careful about getting one from the classifieds. Sometimes things are not what they appear to be so I would insist on things like vet records, find out why they want to re-home this pup at that age etc.
Good luck!

Thanks I am just concerned because his tail isn't as fluffy as normal purebred Pomeranian, it looks more like a Finnish Spitz' tail.

I am thinking of visiting him. Do you have any tips on how to find out if hes a pure Pomeranian when I go to see him?

Thanks!

Lee I think that unless this dog was registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, you will have to take the owner's word for it. If you can find a Pom breeder to go with you they might be able to tell by looking.
Good luck
Jean

to small for that and pom's have that tail too and remember the ugly stage...

most hairy breeds have around maturity a stage where they fall out in fluff and look "ugly" so to say... it might be a spitzcross, small dogs isn't my speciality at all.. but if she don't have the pedigree from the kennel club the dog will be concidered a mixed breed anyhow.. if she has the correct paperwork you are good to go.. go there, look at the dog and look at the papers.. she don't have them, say thank you and walk away...

Another thing bothering me is the lightness of color for a Pom. They are usually if well bred a real redish color or very tan. I would definately check this out into detail as the color is just toooo light.

It looks like a pom to me
they also come in all diffrent types of color
if its not a well bred pom it might not have the thick heavy coat
It might just be going threw the puppy uglys with its coat.
like some aussie puppys do

Looks a whole like my mother's Pom, Taliesin including in weight!

The light coloring is NOT a problem! The rust is preferred, that's all. It has nothing to do with being well bred. The other key thing here, looks like a Finnish Spitz? Remember, Poms are kith and kin to the Spitz. Every so often this type of build on a Pom will fall out of the lines (even with good selective breeding, it's called a Fall Out). Frankly, Tali has better teeth and overall health than Fizzgig (the Pom on the back of the couch). Mom got Tali as a wee lil fluffball, it was a surprise when she grew up to be a fall out.

Even saying that, I would be skeptical of the ad, though. As others have said why are they getting rid of him at 9 months? Is he registered? A pedigree would be the only way to verify that he is in fact a purebred. Do your homework before you met the dog and know precisely what you're looking for. If something looks fishy--WALK AWAY!
