Why do jack russell terrier's tails look snipped?

I have a five year old, we bought her from a family when she was one year old. And I have noticed that her tail looks snipped off, from what I recall the family didn't seem abusive and I looked online and some of the pictures of terriers I saw look to have the same tail end. Is this genetics?

HI i am surprised no one has answered this! basicaly it's because the tails have been docked it's a practice that is illegal in the uk
and most dog owners don't like it when tails are docked hope this helps
