Default " It's Me or the Dog", totally irresponsible...

They just had a segment so moronic I can't even begin to articulate what was wrong with it...grrrrrrrrr. I know they have a show to present and like Cesar they have to target the issue and wrap it up nicely in a half hour program.

They showed a family with two preschool boys and a baby and an ill- behaved bull terrier. The husband is annoyed with the dog and swats and pushes at it. The wife whines into the camera about how she just doesn't knowww what to doooo.

The dog jumps and snaps indiscriminately at toys, the parents, the kids, and this dog "expert" is called in when one of the kids gets bitten grabbing a ball. Then the family watches as a guy dressed in a dog suit acts out the way you should not play with your doggie. Then I suppose everybody has a good shiny happy chuckle and walks into the sunset...

I couldn't watch any more...they aren't talking about a cocker spaniel who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed sometimes. It's an out of control bull terrier with two ineffective owners and little kids. I'm absolutely an advocate for the bully breeds. But I feel like writing to them to complain about the content of this episode.

Besides making it appear as if people aggression is just...awwww the kids just don't understand about not playing roughly with the doggie. And of course the parents have to present a united front on telling the dog to behave. All neatly wrapped up in a half hour plus time for commercials.

For us bully lovers we know what we love about our special canines but we also have to be realistic. Some nights as a special treat hubby will give Sophie the center bone from a roast. Within minutes she has well chewed and EATEN this massive bone.

With all her fears and utter adorableness, those are jaws that demand respect.

Katydid I saw the whole epsisode which was prabably filmed over a period of 2 weeks. Victoria did warn them about what to do and sadly the dog was pts I am pretty sure it was that episode vary sad. Those powners should haven't had a pit/bully or probably no dog atall as they wern't up for bringing up a dog that requires a heck of lot of work/training etc! I mean Iam only a first time dog owner and needed help with Nipper as I was a wits end with Nipper at about 16 weeks while I did get a trainer in I did enlist the help and advice from this very forum
And I have now got a good (compared to loads of dogs I see) dog who still will from time to time push the boundaries but I have got through it fine using my own methods based on being positive and kind to Nipper
Yes I have made some mistakes and yes I have good triaining methods in place and feel good that it's working Still a long way to go though!

Sometimes that show irks me, but Victoria Stilwell is so so so much better than that Dog "Whisperer" Milan who uses out-of-date, almost barbaric methods to "rehabilitate" the wild beast as he often likes to say. Stilwell, useless? No. A little soft at times yes. But she certainly knows what she's doing and honestly I'd trust her training my dog over anyone using Milan's ridiculous methods anyday. All the success I've had with training my dog has been via Stilwell's methods.

While I don't agree with EVERYTHING millan spoon feeds to his audience, I agree with some-- definitely more then victoria stilwell. Maybe I'm "barbaric" but I dont believe clicking at a psychotically aggressive dog will do anything...
Then I don't want my dog shut down and without personality.....

First of all Cesar Millan IS useless... Victoria is better than him.. I have trained dogs for 13 years and it is my fulltime job. I work a LOT with aggressive dogs.

Basically the way he works will only suppress a dog, not cure it. Victoria can cure them, problem is with a dog that is like that bulldog is that there is very few people who can actually work with them. It requires a special hand and with kids in the family it is just not doable.

It is sad, but when people loose control over their dogs, it can be poor genetics, or training either way it is hard for average family with kids to fix that depending on how bad it is. Most people don't follow through to begin with with basic obedience, let alone a rigorous set up in how to set the dog up for success step by step when have these issues. If Victoria suggested PTS there was likely unsolvable issues. As far as tv trainers she's one of the best.

I don't agree with Stilwell on every issue either. I believe in firm-gentlness, or a combination of both. But I can't stand virtually ANYTHING Milan does. Maybe not everything he does is "barbaric" but in my opinion scaring a dog into submission is not training. I've done a few stupid things in the past when training my dogs. I used to like Millan when he first became popular but man am I glad I did my research. Rolling a dog on his back does NOTHING. I don't care what anyone says. I've known that since I was 9. A dog walking in front of me does not mean he thinks he's alpha. When I walk my dog he is always in front of me, he is not pulling my arm out but walking politely on the leash. What kind of walk is enjoyable at a heel the entire time having a dog being choked? Giving a dog asphyxiate using a slip lead?? I can't believe they allow this garbage on TV.

I guess what bothers me is for people watching that show and believing that there's a fairly simple way to wind down a people aggressive pit. I love the breed but there's alot of folks who just don't have the wherewithall to deal with a powerful potentially dangerous doggie. Historically a fighting dog that was human aggressive wouldn't live long enough to breed. Pittie's need owners who establish in a firmly kind way "I am the source of your food and comfort" from the very first day.

This is why people shouldn't just blindly follow everything they see on TV, you can't blame the people on the show for people watching it and their ignorance.

People should do their own research on something before moving into it or attempting it themselves. Training or otherwise. This is also why I think it's important for people to research a breed before getting one-make sure it is the right breed for them, their future, etc. Also if they're getting from a breeder-to make sure they're getting one from a reputable breeder.

Research is very important.

Victoria is one of the few television dog trainers I like, I enjoy watching her show and think at times it can be educational. But as mentioned before, people shouldn't try things with their dogs just because they saw it done on TV. It's up to the people to do their own research before doing anything.
