In our Obedience class tonight there was a wiry coated solid black dog. I asked them if it was an Airedale cross. They were a little insulted and informed me that it was a purebred Airedale and they had papers for it.
As far as I know Airedales only come in black and tan and if it was a purebred it was a poor specimen. It had a very lowset tail, poor ear set and just did not look a lot like a Airedale. Do they come in solid black? I have looked up the Standards and see nothing about the color solid black. |

Had a look at some Airedale sites & they all say black or grizzle & tan only.

Breed sites usually just give acceptable show coloration, it doesn't mean that other colors might not pop up from time to time. I don't know airedales enough to know if it is possible for an all black to occur, but I do know poodles, after being around them both in the show and pet aspect for 34 years now I've learned a few things about them, and if you look at most poodle sites, it will say they a solid color with shade variations permited. Yet here I am with my Chewie, who is my sig pic.
I too get asked contantly what he is crossed with. I also use to get insulted but have learned to mellow. It's much nicer to ask someone what their dog is than to automatically assume it's a cross just because it doesn't confirm to what is considered desirable in a breed. As far as the airedale having faults, well my Chewie isn't the greatest standard poodle, his tail set is too low, his feet are flat, and his eyelids aren't as tight as they should be, but he's still my dog and I love him.

Just another of example of greedy breeders hyping "new" and "rare" colors like the silver labs have done, just so they can charge ridiculous prices and sell more puppies .

I never thought about one of these bogus registries as it is probably registered with the CKC alright but probably Coninental Kennel Club not the Canadian Kennel Club.
Barbiespoodle. I would never look at your parti poodle and think it was anything but a poodle but this "black" Airedale did look like it had something else in it, not just because it was black. I think the problem is once they start breeding for a rare or unusual color only, they sometimes tend to keep the dog regardless of its' faults but because of the color. I know the owners will love their dog regardless and I certainly did not make any other remarks on anything but it's color, that I had never seen a black Airedale. |

Colour Body saddle black or grizzle as is top of the neck and top surface of tail. All other parts tan. Ears often a darker tan, and shading may occur round neck and side of skull. A few white hairs between forelegs acceptable

I have never heard of an all black Airdale. I bred this breed many years back now and they have black and tan color only. If you want to read about the true Airdale Terriers bred properly this link will tell you also.
