Hi,
Yes there are black Airedales. I have two Airedales--one is the regular black and tan and the other is all black. I tried to upload pictures but they were too large. Anyway, both of our dogs came from Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption (ATRA); an incredible group. Last edited by vagreys; 03-09-2012 at 09:27 AM.. Reason: The owner, also a member, disputes the story and it is irrelevant to the thread. |

This is an old thread but just an update on that "black" Airedale. The people who owned him were going to take him out and shoot him as he would not stay home. He was not neutered and they had no fences so I don't know what they expected.
Anyway, my niece now owns him. They had him neutered and he is a nice dog, not great with little dogs unless he knows them but he had been used for hunting bear. They have hounds but won't be hunting with the Airedale, he is just their pet and they have a fenced in yard so he has no opportunity to go wandering. |

Remember that AKC defines a standard, and that becomes what a breed "is" in their definition.
Also, note that if a breeder has a litter with a black or red in the litter (Airedales), the litter will not be able to be registered if AKC is aware. The result is either culling (killing) the black or red pups, or selling them on the side without papers so the rest of the litter can be registered. Rather merciless, no? Our black airedale has wonderful conformance on every count except color. And he is a beautiful dog, and is pure Airedale in his Airedaleness. No, he is not AKC "blessed" so he is registered in another registry. No, he did not come from a puppy mill. The AKC is an artifact of the Victorian era, of "standards" and of "breeding the best to get the best." The closed stud book results in a pretty limbless family tree - is that good or bad? You decide. But most assuredly, many if not most if not all of the tirades against Airedales with non-standard coat color are uneducated. Take a look at how many different genetic factors have to be aligned to produce a given coat color or color combination - I doubt you are then able to state conclusively that black or red airedales do not happen without crossbreeding. I am not a breeder - just a dog owner, one of said dogs being a black Airedale. |
