Bb,
I always get them too. I just expect them now because I type so slowly. I think it's to help prevent spammers. That's why I tend to used Quick Reply. The Beagle World I am on doesn't have them and has the same software and they continually have lots of spam.

Get them sometimes and sometimes not. Seems to happen most often with 'advanced' reply. It is very frustrating when I can't even read some of the capcha

That's the point techie I don't type slowly and I still
get them then I can go weeks/months don't see any and then I start getting them again!

I never get them when I do a quick reply. I do get them when I do an advanced reply. They may be a pain, but it's there for a reason. You can't imagine how much spam this Forum gets on a daily basis.

Dee I and we know what it's for But maybe there is some settings that need tweaking a little by Chipp or Admin Everyone who has commented aren't new members by any means LOL!! I often visit another forum that deals with technical problems and Tv/Radio in general they too have spam softeware but I have never had a Captcha once and they also provide Spam statistics on how many spammers have been blocked
My like everyone elses IP address is know by this forum servers and should know we aren't spammers, shouldn't they? Iam just wanting this to be looked at again to see if anything can be adjusted with out compromising security to the forum? Regards

Yes, there are long-serving members who get Captcha screens--like me. Dave, don't take it personally. Our anti-spam measures don't know or care who you are.

There are many ways to deter spam. Captcha is one of those. Some sites don't use a Captcha approach, at all. Not all sites use the same forum software. Different forum packages use different approaches, often in combination. Sometimes the ISP's impose their own spam blocking front-end through their servers, and the forum operators have no control over that and sometimes limited control. Our methods for fighting spam change as the spammers change their tactics. Some can be adjusted, and some can't. IP's change. IP's get spoofed. Because a post comes from a particular IP doesn't make it 'trusted' or 'untrusted', 'good' or 'bad', 'spam' or 'legitimate'. The anti-spam software doesn't care that a post is coming from a registered member. Some human spammers register and make a series of innocuous posts, sometimes over several months, before starting in with the spam.

We try very hard to make the spam prevention process as painless as possible in this environment. The long-promised upgrade of the forum, when it happens (soon, we hope), will change what we can do in terms of anti-spam features. We will still have a layer of spam prevention at the ISP level. We will have more options and different methods within the forum, itself. Some of these we can just turn on or off and have no other control. They will apply at the forum level, and cannot be turned on or off for particular individuals.

At the bottom of the main page you will find a list of visitors in the past 24 hours. Some of these are obvious spam accounts. Of those, some are banned and have been coming back for months or even years attempting to spam the site. Others are in the registration process. Very, very few ever make it into the forum to post. That's what Captcha and other anti-spam measures are designed to do. So, don't take it personally.

ETA: I had to complete a Captcha to post this response.
