Default Beware of hyperlinks in posts

Folks we try very hard to make sure that no one has links in their posts to sites that are potentially harmful. However, sometimes members are faster than the moderators in responding to new members.

If someone has used the hyperlink feature to disguise the URL, (as opposed to leaving it as "http//whatever") please use caution when clicking the link. You may be directed to a site that will try to download spyware or scumware onto your computer.

Thanks, I will watch for that. I know I have heard from people to not click on "links" but wondered how you could tell the OK ones from the bad ones.

Just as an example, I can link to the home page of dogforum.org by posting the URL:

http://www.dogforum.org/index.php

or I can post it as a hyperlink in the text:

Our Very Own Dog Forum

In the first case you can see where you are going to be directed right in the post. In the second case you can see it in the "status bar" at the bottom of the page if you hover over the hyperlink with your mouse.

I generally do a WHOIS search and google before clicking anything unfamiliar and you can do the same.

The moderating staff also has tools for checking whether someone is a spammer or not. And most of us have up-to-date anti-virus software so if the PC starts sounding the alarm, we know the site is bad.

But they could lie with the links, they could write the address of somewhere that seems good, but if they are nasty, they could have it go to somewhere where you could get a virus, on forums its all about trust, and I trust people on here, more then I should maybe

Yes you can trust members here and their links. This is one of the things that the moderating team does behind the scenes make sure that the forum is free from spammers and crooks and that members are safe in clicking links.

So if you see a first post from a new member and there is a link in the post, please be careful. In general if someone from the moderating team has already replied, that means its been checked out and is ok. I say in general because I have missed one or two myself but someone else caught it.

That's ok most the time, I wait for someone else to respond, see what they say, if they say that it's good then I will read it, but I most the time I can't be bothered lol.

I won't hyper link any more I will keep the links so they can be visible. Just to stop any confusion. I have never put a dodgy site in any of my links (just wanted to say that)

Thanks for the info Skunkstripe, appreciate it.
