Default The Zenster

I haven't had much to write about, in awhile. My Greys are Greys. They sleep. They eat. They go outside for as little exercise as they can get away with. They sleep some more. Zen gets prancy and playful for a minute or two. Damiri routinely wants us to play tug with her over her super-tough Kong bone, about 9:30, each evening. They look forward to their bedtime cookie, after their last turnout. They sleep some more. And there is really very little to tell.

In addition to having an ancient cat, we have Mr. Zen, our senior Greyhound, who is now 13-1/2 yrs old. He's draped over my ankles, at the moment. Retired racing Greyhounds have a normal lifespan of 12-15 years. In the last few months, Zen's mobility has decreased - he had a flare up of arthritis a couple of months ago and has been on pain management meds, ever since. As with many Greyhounds, his difficulties appear to be in his neck, shoulders, and hips, but mostly his hips. He is experiencing geriatric weight loss, but not extreme. His back end is decidedly weaker than it was. He has difficulty negotiating even just three steps, now, so we are considering putting in a ramp for him to use for turnouts and walks. He is no longer "Mr. Grumpy Pants", as Monkey calls him. He rather likes to have company in order to sleep well. He's gone almost entirely white in the face, now. His ears, once very dark are just slightly grey. The "Egyptian eyeliner" markings around his eyes, once so striking, have mostly disappeared.

Aging isn't kind. We had to have several of his teeth pulled, awhile back, and now he squirts water and kibble out the sides of his long mouth, when he eats and drinks. And when he sleeps, his tongue falls out the gap between his teeth on his left side. Funny, but not so dignified, no. Zen has developed sleep incontinence, leaving us a little turd to deal with some mornings. Though he desperately wants not to soil the house, and tells us when he needs to go out, he simply isn't getting the signals as early as he used to, and frequently starts to go before we can get him outside. I try not to anthropomorphize my dogs, but he seems so embarrassed, and I feel badly for him. We use our steam carpet cleaner a lot more often, these days.

Aging isn't kind. In fact, aging sucks. I'm about to be away for three months, and I'm gong to miss the Old Man. I'm going to miss having to fight for space on the futon when he drapes himself across my legs and decides to become larger than life, taking up the bottom half of this queen-size futon mattress. And I am already looking forward to being back and having everyone in their accustomed places. I don't expect Zen to pass while I'm gone, but at his age, one never knows. With a little luck, he'll be there to greet me when I come back through the door, as he has been so very many times in the past 8 years.

It's so hard when they get to this stage. I am sure you are giving hims lots of love too. Fecal incontinence is embarrassing. For dogs and humans.

It's amazing how attached we get to our dogs. I know you're excited about going to BC, but being away from your family and furry kids, is the hardest part. Every time I visit family, or end up in the hospital, I call twice a day. Every morning and evening, just to "check" on them.
Enjoy your time in BC! Hope you are able to check in every now and again.

I will have my laptop and regular internet access. We plan to video chat by Skype, as my work schedule allows.

It's hard watching them get old, but nice at the same time knowing they are getting old with the best care they could have. And so hard leaving them, especially for so long. I'm sure it's much harder on you than it is them if they are still at home with the rest of your family.

I've always got home sick for family friens and especially my dogs.

Both are doing fine. Only three weeks remaining, here in BC.

Enjoy BC. Glad your furkids are doing fine. As PMR said it's much harder on you than it is them. They surely miss you, like you do them. However, they are probably not worrying about you like you are worrying about them.
