Lianne, are you running into the captcha page when you try to post? It asks you to copy the letters that you see so that you can proceed.

Hi Lianne, so sorry for the hassles.

The 'captcha', or security check, is part of a service that we've recently set up to help cut down on advertising spam in the forums (as well as making things speedier overall). Unfortunately, it seems to be a little bit overzealous and is showing captchas to people (like you) who really have no reason to see them.

The good news is that, over time, the software learns the people who successfully enter the captchas and will stop prompting for them. The bad news is that it seems to be taking quite a while for some members.

I've made a note of your IP address so that we can add you to the 'whitelist', or list of people that should always be trusted by the system.

Ah, I was wondering what that was all about.....I've had to enter the letters 3 or 4 times now!

When I posted about Nellie's accident during an episode of the "zoomies", and the capcha caught me, I suddenly wondered if "zoomies" was a drug reference I'd never heard of before LMAO.

But it crops up occasionally even when I haven't said anything contentious at all......!

TBH it's not a problem, I think its a brilliant move to prevent these spammers and ads. I still sometimes get an advert pasted in the quick reply box - I just come out of the thread and go back in again, stupid thing! How do they do it?

I thought we had a different IP address each time we sighed on. But then again now that we are on DSL maybe not.

It is true that most residential IP addresses can change over time, but we hope that as the software continues to learn what kind of traffic is okay and what kinds aren't the number of people we'll need to keep adding to the white list as their IPs change will shrink.

Thanks Chipp,
I out of date on this stuff. (Like NT4? Wait! That was before you were born probably!)

Hi CurlySue,

Could you please elaborate a little bit on what you mean by adverts in the quick reply box? Is there content seemingly pre-inserted for you from somewhere?

Hi Chipp,

Yes that's exactly it....occasionally, the reply box seems to have some ad text pre-inserted, including formatting etc. It looks more like a section of an advertisement has found its way in there! I usually just come back out of the thread, go back in again, and its gone.

And tonight, I just spent an hour typing up Nellie's visit to the specialist, tried to get past the capcha twice and kept getting the white screen of death. Back button didn't want to play ball either, lost everything....bah!!

If it's not too much hassle, could I be added to this whitelist too? Because I get captcha'd all the time, and some of those things are really hard to read... I promise I'm (sort of) human.

Edit: Hey, this time it didn't captcha me, perhaps I've been too impatient. Does this mean it's learned I'm accepted now? (Sorry to bother you if so!)
