Default Puppy gets hyper at night

hey all,

so my 4 month old german shepherd seems to always get really hyper at night. During the afternoon or early evening she's not too bad. But then around 8 or 9 for some reason its like someone filled her with sugar and caffeine.

any ideas why?

Dogs are usually more active morning & night, while they sleep in the day. Maybe she's using up that pent up energy she's stored during the day.

What time are you feeding her, and what does she eat? Sometimes gas in the stomach makes puppies wild. And do you give her a walk in the evening? This will use up some pent up energy from sleeping.

Rudy STILL gets hyper at night just before he crashes for sleep. I think it is like a frantic child just before they fall asleep.

You could try taking her for a good long walk or run or just a good long playtime before bed to tire her out. I find a tired dog is usually a good dog adn falls alseep at night without much problem.

Our neighbor next door got a puppy a few weeks ago, and she told me her pup has a lot of energy in the evening too.
The pups sleep A LOT during the day, so its only natural for some to get very excited and energetic after waking up from their nap in the evening hours.

Perhaps if you did the following :
1) you could play with or walk the pup, tire him/her out
2) or during the day, maybe more like in the afternoon, gently wake the pup and play with or walk him/her, so she is tired in the evening.

Only problem with suggestion #2 is that it might cause the pup to be awake and energetic in the middle of the night! Do you feel like playing with him/her at around 2 a.m.? LOL

I've got more gas then she does (and thats probably more info then you wanted I just started her on Solid Gold wolf pup...she was on eukanuba large breed puppy food up until a few days ago. But I havent noticed any digestive problems. She eats all her food and poops just as much (unfortunately) as before. Plus she would get this hyper before we switched her food.

The odd thing is she's usually running around playing starting at 6pm...and she's somewhat mellow, for her anyhow. Then around 9 or 10 it's like someone turned up a dial.

I tried playing with her to tire her out...but it seems like i get tired way before she does

Oh solid gold is a good one! Just take her out to play ( not before or after eating as you know..) .. Puppy sillys are pretty common- but with my shepherds- especially the ones when they were young, I just took them outside and ran their legs off with a game of fetch.. lol..
( remember not to feed a shepherd after having exercise an hour before, and do not exercise for at least an hour afterward..)

glad you put in that time qualifier.... otherwise i was wondering how exactly i can play with her except for before and after feeding

That's what i've been doing inside. I need to pick up a nice long leash so i can do that outside otherwise I'll definitely get tired before she will
