Default My Little Suck.....

I have a 5 month old Collie girl who whines and cries terribly when I leave her in her crate while I go out. I don't leave her that long. One time hubby and I left her for 4 hours while we shopped and had dinner out.

I know she gets terribly upset because when I come home she is frantically happy to see us. Just like a child you can hear in her voice she has been crying.

What can I do to help her better cope with her time in the crate?

We had the crate in our bedroom and she slept in it at night, it didn't make a difference then either she did the same thing. We have now moved the crate to the basement family room and she sleeps loose now.

Hi Pauline,

I have yet to train Amber to stay on her own at home in her crate, not looking forward to it though. I learnt that you have to do it gradually, like taking 5 minutes outside and gradually increasing the time, so your dog gets used to it slowly and knows you are coming back.

We tried Amber in her crate in our room to sleep and she wouldn't have it. So we took her crate back down stairs where it's always been, and she sleeps soundly on her own in the lounge. I guess she sees this as her territory. Anywhere else is alien to her.

Good luck, and I am sure someone here can help you.
