Default Need To Verify About My Litter.

I whelped 7 puppies yesterday from about 5 to 11 p.m. Gillion was playing the day before, I was pitching a toy for her to catch for exercise in the house, it went higher than it should have, she jumped high of course and caught it landed hard on her side. I knew then I was going to have trouble, did not know what kind but it ended up me loosing 5 nice gorgeous puppies, some lived for several hours, gave them mouth to mouth but got injured I am certain now due to her hard fall, my fault. Two are eating, healthy and nice. I do not have health issues in my lines so I know with that many it was from the fall on her side so hard. I feel heartborken as she is being such a great mommy. Only one came out back legs first, no problems whelping and so happy she did or it would of killed Gillion. I sell my pups of Pure West German lines for $800 with warrantys, etc. I just feel loosing all that was presold makes me feel badly for the people waiting so Sasha is in heat now and can be bred to replace in a few days. All my customers are great people and was waiting so anxiously makes me so sick. If I would of ignored her she always wanted to play, high drive dog, this would never happened pups were fat, beautiful coats and I did it. Just wanted you all to know what is what , here. No happy at all, in fact so blue I have no energy left for thinking so much. I have never had a heart problem so I know it came from the hard fall as she was heavy and big in pups. She looks so sad. Will send photos in few days when my head clears.

You're a good breeder and a good Mom but a high drive dog is very difficult to keep calm.YOu didn't make her jumped, she did !.I'm so sorry for the loss of yr pups but please don't beat yrself up.I'm sure yr clients will understand that things can happen.I went on yr site and You have beautiful dogs.

No sheplovr- stop blaming yourself. A little exercise will if anything help to get the labor going, and a bitch that far in whelp is not going to over do it.
I know its heartbreaking. Even with all the tests on the breeding dogs, and records of all the past dogs as being clear of defects- when you mix two the genetics combination can change. Just like breeding two drop dead beautiful champions can make pet quality- we do not know all about genetics and how it works with a different set. Alot of recessive genes can be carried for generations with no signs until that ONE combination.
I wish I could give you a big hug. Even in best case scenio, something can wrong.

Oh darlin'

I am so sorry for you, but dont go blaming yourself. I agree with golden and hovawart....they are so high energy and sometimes they just need to play, and you didnt make her jump, she chose to...and there is always the small possibiliy of genetics as well. Please dont beat yourself up. keep your chin up and though it is hard now things will get better.

I wish I was there to give you ::BUG HUGS::, but since I am not I will give you my best wishes and the biggest virtual hug I can.

I am so sorry Pat. Things happen for a reason and sometimes we can not see that reason. I am happy you still have 2 puppies that are healthy.

I have bred shepherds for many years. I have never found them to be a high strung dog or hard to whelp. They are a naturally loving attentive mother.

Something wasn't right - something that could NOT have been avoided.
Do a necropsy at least on two of the ones that didn't make it. If you still have the umbilical cords take that too. At least it will give you the answer.
Pat darling- you know it can happen. Never to you, but it can. Born appearance of healthy I suspect something else that we discussed on the phone.

I agree that you need to do Post Mortems on a couple of them to find out the cause. It may have had nothing to do with the fall she may have an infection that she passed onto the pups or anything. For me peace of mind would be better.

Oh Pat, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss Please don't blame yourself for what happened...it was an accident, these things happen. I'm happy to hear that you didn't lose all the puppies....I'm glad that you have two healthy, gorgeous pups, and that the mother wasn't harmed.
