Default Puppy Growth - Is Max on Target?

Does anyone know how to determine if my puppy is gaining weight at an appropriate rate? First let me explain that he's seen his vet twice and the vet didn't comment on his weight gain between visits. It was a busy 2nd visit, so I forgot to specifically ask.

Next, some background. Max is a Louisiana Catahoula. Adult weight range of males is about 70 - 90 lbs, depending on which web-site you look at. Max is 16 weeks on this coming Friday (2/9) and weighed 29 lbs on Monday 1/29.

Any ideas if he's growing too fast?

I don't know anything specific about the breed but as your vet didn't say anything I would be inclined to think that he's growing perfectly normally. They grow so, so fast at that age. You can usually tell anyway, you don't have to be an expert to see whether a puppy's tummy is overly fat or if their ribs are sticking out far too much.

I'm sure someone else knows more about the breed but I'm sure hes fine!

After I posted we took a little walk and I really took a close look at him. I think you're probably right MegBonnie - he's fine. He looks pretty sleek.

I was mainly concerned because I've been reading about hip displaysia and that too rapid weight gain when a puppy can lead to the disease later in life - especially if pre-disposed due to inheritance.

He's going to be a BIG boy - I bet.

My understanding is that rapid growth in large breed dogs is linked to food - perhaps give you vet a quick call and ask his advice about appropriate diet if you have any concerns.

I know nothing about the breed, but I did look into growth rates recently. As I understand it, a general rule of thumb is at four months (17 weeks) a dog is expected to be around 1/2 of his adult weight. If you had him weighed at about 14 weeks and he was 29 lb, he sounds like he is about on track.

Hi! There are 3 different lines of Catahoula Leopard dogs, each with a different range for weight. There are some great houla information sites on the internet. Hope this helps.
