I have always free fed my dogs which worked fine with my Shih Tzu x Maltese. They never overeat and maintain their weight well, never had one get fat.

With Kris and Susie, my two big dogs, I have to moniter their food as they tend to eat too much if left on their own. With Bonnie, being a puppy, she needs to eat more often so in order for her to get enough without Kris eating it all, I have had food and water in with her every night and it has not seemed to make it any harder to housebreak her than any of my others. Again, I think it depends on the dog.

youre probably right, it likely depends on the dog. our last dog did not have a tremendous love of food (when he was healthy at least, he developed medical issues with eating and that's just a long story), he would eat and stop if no longer hungry. he wasnt a big treat guy either.
our new puppy is a lab, and I've read (and the vet & breeder told us as well) that they tend to like to overeat and can get fat very quickly. so I want to keep the food intake under control too.
