Default Jumping Pom

My pom is now a lil over 7 months old, and he is a little on the hyperactive side. No matter how much exercise he gets, whenever he sees new people or dogs, he gets so hyper! He absolutely loves every single human and dog. The problem is, when he gets so excited to see someone not only does he squirt a little, but he jumps and a lot. Very high in the air, and it really concerns me.

Its so annoying because sometimes his teeth get caught on your pants in the butt area and its impossible to walk down the hallway in peace. Im really afraid that something will happen to his lil back legs and knees. I noticed today his right back leg was giving him pain and he cried for a second or two. But still, when my boyfriend came over, he jumped and jumped and jumped at him.

Say "no jump" and then turn around, fold your hands over your chest and IGNORE him. No matter how high he jumps, if he tears your clothes, IGNORE him. When he understands that he will not get any attention for bad behavior he will stop.

But be forewarned: if your doggie has been having fun bu jumping on you and getting off on having you yell and carry on, you may have to deal with what is called an "extinction burst".

Hmm I dont think its extinction burst. Its more of a "AHH IM SO HAPPY TO SEE ____ I NEED TO JUMP HIGH SO I CAN LICK THEIR FACE!!!!"

Its more of a greeting matter than an attention matter.

No no, I was saying that if you want him to stop, you can try completely ignoring him. He is doing it to get your attention so if you withold the attention it might get him to stop jumping. Only when he has all four paws on the floor do you reward him with attention, petting, praise etc.

What sometimes happens though is that he will jump higher, harder, faster etc because his trick is no longer working and that it takes him a long time to realize that he is better off not jumping. This is the part that is referred to as an "extinction burst".

and don't forget to get the other people to do the same thing that way he's not getting attention from anyone unless he stops. Then reward with a pat, but do the same thing if he jumps up again

Hi, yes i agree with Skunkstripe. We have two chihuahua's cross Cavlier King Charles Spaniels and our little boy is just so hyper. I used to say he was like a jumping jack. Exactly the same as what you are describing jumpinp up so high whenever people or we would come in the house. We did exactly what Skunkstripe said. Folded our arms and turned around and then we would only say hello to him once he had calmed down. It worked too, it takes a while but just be consitent and keep doing it.
Good Luck

yes the best think to do is like wat has already been said but turn your back on the dog untill it learns that if i doesnt jump it will get attention... might take try after try but you will get there... good luck
