Default Keeshond or Cavalier King Charles?

I was hoping to get some advice from the more experienced owners out there. After doing our research we narrowed our decision down to these two breeds: a keeshond or a cavalier king charles spaniel. We found two breeders relatively near by that are reputable, helpful and have great pups. We've got a good friend who teaches dog obedience classes, we have all our 'puppy supplies' and now we're just trying to make the decision. Growing up, I was around lhasa's and persian cats so the grooming aspect of the keeshond doesn't bother me and, in fact, I always really enjoyed grooming our pets when I was younger. I have, however, heard that because of what they were originally bred for, the kees will be more inclined to bark her fool head off than most other breeds As for the cavalier, I've yet to read anything predominately 'hard' to work on with them. They both look like GREAT breeds, and I've always had a soft spot for the spitz dogs and huskies. But the cavalier has a great little face too and sounds like it's a blast to work with and train. That being said, what are some of your experiences/advice? Thank you all so much for you help!

What do you want in your future dog? What attracts you to these breeds? With more information of your expectations and hopes (and fears), we may be better able to make recommendations.

Kat, welcome to the forum!!! I love, love the Cavalier King's! They do have health issues, so do your homework for potential health risks with any breed you choose. Research your breeders first. Do their pups come with a health guarantee? Are they health tested? How often do they breed their dogs? There are a lot of questions you need to ask any breeder before you purchase.

Monstermom, we're looking for a dog that's good with a family. Our girls are 11 and 13 and both are very good with animals. We're not looking to show or breed nor do we need a watchdog. We're looking for a good, not to small not to big dog that can be a part of the family and that we can work with. I don't have any desire to do agility competitions but I always loved working with dogs as a girl and realize that some breeds are more excited to learn and others are more independent. I know that's a bit basic but hopefully it gives you a general idea

DeeLind, yes they are GREAT breeders! I've talked to other people who have adopted from them after getting their permission. They come with health guarantees and have been tested regularly. They've also been happy to share their inspection reports when I asked. Both the breeders have been breeding for quite some time and only have a few litters each year. One or two males and only a few females. We were welcomed to visit the kennel to meet all the dogs and they've put up with my barrage of questions wonderfully Took me quite a while to find them. It was about the same sort of experience you get when you buy a house. I beat my head against the wall once or twice

Sounds like you've put in the work to find a good breeder, that's excellent!

While I'll say the Kees would be my personal favorite out of these two breeds, I think the Cavalier may be the right choice for you - as long as you have found a breeder who puts in a lot of work on the breed's health problems. In my experience a Cavalier is more willing to please, and will bond more easily with all family members as well as be less standoffish to outsiders. Both would probably be fine to work on tricks and the like with, but I think in general the Cavalier is more easily motivated. And yes, I'd expect the Kees to be more of a barker.

But both breeds are pretty far from my preferences in dogs though, and while I have known individuals from both breeds I've never owned either. So my opinions may not reflect reality, merely what I believe to be reality.

Kat, you did more than your share of homeowrk on the breeders. Great job! Let us know which breed you decide on, and of course, we will expect lots of pictures of the pup you decide on.

I would probably go with the cavalier, they are usually slightly easier to train and are more snuggly than the kees on an average. Since you have two young girls in your house or preteens I can imagine they wanna cuddle the puppy a lot. A cavalier is more for that than kees who can be a very tough little dog in that package.

That would be the only thing I can think of *lol*

Good job on the research and welcome to the forum
