Default Puppies and cats?

Ok so I am thinking of getting a puppy. Well my boyfriend is getting it for my birthday, but I want to assure everyone I am not an irresponsible person, just because it's for my birthday doesn't mean that a month later I will starve it because I'm bored!!!!
We have two cats though, one is 14 1/2 one is almost 14. They aren't particularly violent, but I am worried in case they don't get on. We were thinking of getting a springer spaniel, from a rescue home who is around 6 months old. i don't want my kittys to be sad and depressed as we have another animal in the house, but at the same time I don't really see them being too bad once they are all adapted to each other. We had a male stray cat for a while, and whilst they didn't like being in the same room and separated themselves to the two girls upstairs and the male downstairs they never really fought. they didn't seem to be particularly worried by him either. Is it better to get a male dog with two female cats or to keep it all female or does it not make a difference? Also, are there any breeds of dog which are a definite no-no when you have cats? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as well as anyone's tips for introducing them, and ways to keep the cats feeling safe and secure instead of pushed out! thanks

Hi I have answered this in your introduction and said I have 5 dogs and a cat don't think the sex of the dog or the cats makes any difference. Hope things work out do keep us posted.
