Default The Art of Ear Taping

Ion, being a rough collie with potential for the show ring, requires his ears taped to ensure that they fall properly when he is an adult. We want his ears to sit nicely on top of his skull and the tips rosepricked. I had noticed that the tape brace was actually left slack between his ears and even when a tip came loose last week it was still flopped over. Now, I have been well informed that when he teeths (coming up, just starting actually), that they can do some VERY awkward rearanging! So, I won't stop taping... but... we took the tape out for a changing (and a bath) and I am very happy with how he's looking!

Nothing is holding those babies in place.

He might make the show ring yet.

His ears are looking great.

One of the things I love most about roughs is their ears, they're so expressive

What a beautiful dog Draco. Don't understand why you would want to mess with him though, let nature takes it course - she usually knows best!

Bugle, he has the potential of being a show dog--if his ears decided to form the cartilage with them upright he couldn't be shown. The taping guides that. Ion is about to teeth, when that happens the ears go bonkers at all sorts of angles and can settle either over or under tipped. I work alongside his breeder who has lines riddled with champions going back well over a decade. I think she knows what she is doing in advising me.

Or, like in MacKenzie's case, one ear tipped and the other didn't - at all!!

All his pic's of him growing up show one ear straight up and the other tipped nicely.

I never intended to show him so as far as I'm concerned it just gives him a little more character....like he needed more of that!!..

Thanks for the explanation - all I can say is each to their own, but perhaps I have always known instinctively not to get involved in the show scene. If this is what we have to inflict on our dogs in the name of beauty, I'll leave you to it Draco! Personally, I cannot understand a) what is wrong with such a beautiful dog having floppy ears, erect ears or a mixture of both b) he is a shepherd dog, bred for herding sheep. Don't think the sheep would be less or more impressed by whether the little darling has floppies or uprights or a mix and c) I would have thought that health and vigour were more important than such trifles. But as I say, it takes all sorts, it would be a dull and boring world if we all thought the same.

Draco, I know with some breeds, taping occurs after cropping their ears. Collies aren't cropped though, correct? So pain would be nonexistent, and discomfort minimal? I have the feeling Bugle is misunderstanding what exactly you are doing to Ion.

You got it, Lace. There is NO cutting on the flesh, zero. This is merely putting a little tape to help guide how the ears are forming. No surgery involved. And there is no discomfort as we gently remove the adhesive at each change and clense the area. Not to mention the dogs get used to their ears being handled, so often it aids in them being easier to handle. Ion lies on his back and smiles up at us while we do it.
