Question Spaying

I just have a quick question. At what age should a puppy be spayed? Isis is only 3 months now. We took her to the vet on Friday for her last boosters (she was 13 lbs 3 weeks ago and is now 20 lbs!) and the vet said we should look at getting her spayed between 5-1/2 to 6 months. Last time I took her there, they said we could do it around 5 months. I called the vet I take my cats to this morning, to get another estimate, and they said they don't recommend getting it done until 6 months because if she still has baby teeth by then, they'll take them out while she's under because the teeth will cause problems later in life. Their price was a little less too.

So now I'm confused...do we wait until she's 6 months?

Kittiei If for eg: Isis say has just had a season It's best to wait for around 2 months for the hormones to settle down as these so soon after being in season can cause problems. Also my vet wanted me to wait till at least 10 months old as my dog would be heavier then and would need more anasethic I sussed that one out and spoke to the RSPCA who gave me a telephone number and instead of 160.00 that's 10.00 per Kg weight Nipper was 16 kg so that's a lot of cash to spend. Any way the number the RSPCA gave me was miles cheaper at only 75 all in and for 2 trips to the vet. Sorry Iam drifting away!

I would say yes 6 months old is ok but if she is coming into and is having her season delay the spaying till everything is settled down. I have not heard of teeth problems in that sense this would make it dearer IMO. I would spay no earlier than 6 months old! Good Luck and ATB

This is a subject that many debate about. Some people believe that you should wait till after the dogs first season. Others believe that you should do it by 6 months. I would suggest researching the topic, and deciding what you think is best. I personally waited until after Quinn's first season. I did notice however, that her incision, proportionately, was longer than the kitten who's was done before she ever went into season. I am betting that more people will chime in though. It really does boil down on personally opinion though.

Thanks for the info everyone! I think we're probably going to wait until 6 months, we'll see how it goes

I waited until after Tilba had her 1st season at 10 mths & had her spayed at 14 mths. This gives the hormones a chance to do their job & let the dog mature properly. This was the article that made my decision for me.

If you can't guarantee that she won't get pregnant I would still have her done at 6 mths which is when we always used to have dogs & cats done.
