Default Puppy Behaviour

Does anyone know what it means when a puppy smacks his teeth? There is no aggression or teeth showing, just the sound of the teeth chatter.

When I have seen this behavior it has been in two separate situations. 1) extreme excitement 2) nerves I have seen it more with extreme excitement, fueled by intense anticipation such as feeding time, teasing with a ball, being held back from running to its owner, that sort of thing.

Yup, I see it most associated with extreme excitement as well, in playgroups with the dogs at work. That's usually a sign for me to calm someone down a few notches.

Question....how do you calm down a dog that is doing the teeth thing but isn't moving or anything?
Could it mean that the pup wants to play but hasn't learned how to and gets nervous, making his teeth chatter?

If he does it and is not moving I would say it's extreme anxiety. He's passive, I would say give him room and time? is this the new rescue or is it next week he's coming?
What is going on around him when he's doing this?

Yes it's the new rescue pup Timber that does this. I only noticed it happen once. Lincoln was far off in the field. Timber was watching him then he chattered his teeth. That was it. Then he turned around and came over for some affection. Tynan was off chewing on his stick. There were no dogs in his immediate area and both were doing their own thing.

Hmm doenst sound like either... was he on leash? n that case it could of been excitement and the fact of not being able to chase after and wanting to. Other than that I am almost suspecting a random thing esp if he's normal in all other cases.

No Timber wasn't on a leash. I know Snoopy does it sometimes too, but it's never been an issue. (it isn't so much as a teeth chatter but a mouth movement which is very similar to it)

Maybe the fact of choosing got him overexcited, a fun chase or a good snuggle. Was probably nothing more than that.. he seems to do so fine overall so I doubt its anything serious. Oh and I posted in another thread does he have any purple psots on his tounge?
