Default Another puppy or not?

Our Rahab, a female Doberman, just turned 6 months old. She's full of beans and vinegar- a fairly high energy dog. My wife's already wanting to get another puppy, preferably another Dobie, so Rahab will have a playmate. What do you think of this idea? Do you think Rahab would be jealous? She did get along well, and play nicely with, the other pups at her clicker training classes. She was very cautious and not really rough with them. Karen's found a 3 month old male Doberman for sale that I think she really wants.

We're thinking that if we have another pup they'll play together and tire each other out. A tired dog is a good dog. Now, whenever Karen's at work or Bible study, Rahab just kind of lays around moping, naps on my feet, or plays half-heartedly then gets rambunctious when Karen gets home. If she had a playmate maybe there'd be less separation anxiety on Rahab's part, and maybe she'd act calmer when her pack (Karen and/or I) get home.

Also, Karen (who as recently ago as last August disliked and feared dogs) wants to start adopting dogs. We're even considering starting a PAWS chapter here in Cebu.

Wisely or foolishly, we did it! We got an 11 week old male Doberman pup. His name was Paksiw but we're calling him Joshua. He seems to be a lot lower-energy dog than Rahab considering his age.

Rahab is in doggie heaven! Those two have already bonded and Rahab is an excellent big sister: she plays very gently and lets the young guy take the lead. She even shares her toys. We have to feed her where Josh can't reach so she gets a chance to eat, as otherwise she lets him have her food. We're being careful to show affection and play with both pups equally, and to get them both to interact with us as well as each other for human socialization purposes.

It's going to be difficult to housebreak young Joshua. Rahab of course always squats when she goes potty so it was easy to see when she was starting to go and move her to the newspapers real fast. Josh just piddles standing up wherever he happens to be.

We've learned a lot about training dogs since we first brought Rahab home and plan to apply this knowledge to Joshua. He's going to grow up to be a good dog. Rahab's even better behaved now that her little brother is here: she gets a lot more play-time and exercise than we could give her so she gets more of that energy of hers burned up.

Hi,

I think I must have missed when you guys first joined the forum so welcome

Second since you did get a second one I say it was a good thing getting one of opposite gender. However a couple of warnings, a pup that young need a LOT of sleep, if you notice that they play too much or he's getting stressed you will need to seperate them. Pups sometimes cant different when its enough. As a former Dobie owner I can tell you its easy enough now. The tough part will be when they hit 1-2 years and will do so close in time. Thats when they start testing bounderies and will stop listening, where you will need to put in all the extra work. To make this time easier, do a lot of seperated training, like socialise them one at the time, basic obedience in different situations one at the time. This so they dont learn bad stuff from one another and also that you can be consistent and firm with them.

Also them two playing will just reinforce their physical ability and give them more energy in the long run. If you truly want them to burn energy you need to do more mental stimulation, where they get to use their brain and sniffer. To take them to a city/village to socialise is very good way of making them tired. All the impressions from people, cars, moving objects, sounds and smells will wear them out rather quickly and its an awesome place to train focus and obedience at.

I saw the picture and Joshua is absolutely adorable. Speaking of experience with rescuing please wait til these two have grown up. I have one rescue right now and despite the age of 6 she's giving me 3 year old pittie a run for the money on activity level. I have one 9 year old one 6 and one 3 year old and them together is enough to keep me busy. You have two young dog sthat will require a lot of time to become as good house pets as they can be, if you add in more dogs with possibly bad habits your pups might pick up on them. On the other hand if you raise them very well they can become the teachers for future rescues. My old lady here has helped me with many dogs they follow her ques and she has helped fearful and aggressive dogs to reassess that the situations that triggers them isnt all that bad once they bond with her.

I wish you guys good luck and I hope for many more dobie photos It is one of my favorite breeds!!

Salamat, Bigboy & Monkey.

We've taken Rahab to a basic obedience class where there were three other puppies: two yellow labs and an Akita. It was based on the clicker-training positive reinforcement method and letting the dog figure out what behavior would earn her a click and treat. Actually it was more like training Karen and me so we could train Rahab. We learned a lot. We also bought and watched the entire Mastering Leadership series of DVDs by Cesar Milan which also taught us a lot. (We even went out and bought a DVD drive for our PC so we could watch these as it only came with a CD-R drive).

I think we know enough to be able to train Joshua by ourselves without having to attend another class. Point taken in the suggestion to train the two of them seperately. That will also help Rahab to remain socialized and bonded with us and help Joshua to become that way.

We actually live in the city. Their main exercise area is the courtyard of our apartment building and we're usually accompanied by the neighbor's kids wanting to play with Rahab, which sets up some nice distractions. We also take her for walks up to a field next to a strip mall just up the road a few hundered meters. That hasn't tired Rahab out in the past, it just makes her wired. What tires her is the mental exercises such as we do when teaching her new behaviors using the clicker, such as "sit", "down", "stay", "up" and "leave it". We didn't start with her until she was already 5 months old and I'm looking forward to starting Joshua now when he's younger.

Rahab acts like a doting big sister, like an 8 year old girl taking care of a toddler. For example, I just noticed that when I go in and out the door Josh comes over and tries to squeeze outside. Rahab paws him and either pins him down or pulls him back inside until I can get the door closed! She's such a sweetheart!

We actually want to start doing dog rescue work and I agree that it will be better to wait until both of the "children" are mature before we start bringing more dogs into our home and lives. Anyway, Karen says she'll stop wanting to get more dogs now ... for a while. (I remind you that this is the woman that was afraid of dogs just 5 months ago! Just last year she hurt herself slightly climbing in through a window because the family spitz was loose in the yard.)

Hi Jay and karen ( hope I got your names right as they are the first to appear in your sig!! LOL as you are going to be good leaders of the pack. No ain't going to turn this to a Cesar thread and I hope others don't as well. Apart from I have a lot of respect for him, enough said

I think you are right to wait before you get any more dogs. Like it was said earlier they are getting on great now, but be prepared for when they get older and start pushing boundaries as they will do Prevention is always better than cure IMO. Put the good work in and you will reap benifits long term Really good luck on your venture and also with your 2 dogs which are adorable but always see beyond the adorabilty and you wont go far wrong ATB to you both.

Congratulations on your new addition! I've had dogs that were raised from puppyhood with each other and I found it was a wonderful experience. The one that was slightly older actually served as a good role model/mentor for the younger which helped a good deal in training and housebreaking. Much luck and keep those adorable photos coming :-)
