Default 2 more puppies from beginners

Today was graduation day for the current beginners class. Being another slightly dusty & very windy day there were only 3 dogs in the class.

Fifteen minutes into the lesson 2 schnauzer puppies arrived late & I was asked to take them on a long lead for recalls. A trainee instructor was talking to the girl with the female pup. When I got closer I discovered the pup was wearing some underpants. I thought it strange until I caught up with the conversation.

The trainee instructor was saying that the pants wouldn't prevent a male dog from mating with her. Ahhhhhhhhh I thought. Is she on heat? I asked. Yes.

Turns out the girl wants her pup to experience being a mum & she wants to be a 'grandmother' & not be unhappy when the pup dies. Also thinks she needs to have puppies to be whole & happy. Doing the math, 6 m/o on heat, don't mate until at least 3rd heat, so need to take precautions for subsequent seasons, there may only be 16-18 mths between mum & puppies.

So, I began to tell her all the reasons why she shouldn't breed from this pup. I had done a lot of research on dogs on heat before Tilba had her 1st season. She does have a main register pedigree for the pup but doesn't show her. I told her about having to have the knees & elbows x-rayed, the possibility of birth problems, pet overpopulation, finding homes for all the puppies. I told her to talk to the breeder & see what they thought. Both their pups are rather vocal & they weren't very adept at their training. Of the 4 classes they had missed 2.

Their other pup is an 8 mth old male & they have been left at home all day alone while the owners were at work, so the deed may have been done. She's been on heat for about a week. I also told her to keep her inside & away from their other dog for another 2-3 weeks, that determined dogs could mate through chain wire fences, that she may try to find a mate when the time is right, to carry her to & from the car & house to avoid leaving a trail for other dogs in the area.................

They said they'd come back to complete the course in a few weeks time. The other instructor said she had told them lots of reasons not to mate their dog before I came over. And that I had told them things that she didn't know. She had also had schnauzers in the past & told the owner that her dogs weren't typical of the breed.

Only time will tell if we got through to them.

You have the hips and elbows xrayed if elbows are ok the knees will be. Just to correct that for anybody reading and wondering? Good advice to keep the pet population down for inexperience people wanting puppies and dogs bred. It is needless and dumb to have puppies arrive then what do I do now???? Hmmmm, some people have to be lectured of knowledge of the whelping, homes for pups, all the jazz that goes later, breeding the female is the easy part of it all.??? Hope she listens.
