Default Boxer pup

I collected my boxer pupn2 days ago, he's settled in fine during the day at night is still crying for about an hour at a time then sleeps for an hour and starts crying again. We have decided not to let murphy the boxer sleep upstairs and tried a cage which he hates so now use a basket in the kitchen, how long will these sleepless nights last for?

Also murphy has not yet had his injections but my sister has a 10 month old lab pup who is fully vacinated, can they play together or should I not visit till he's had his jabs?

Aww, he is a cute pup.

Re the other dog coming over - if the lab is fully vaccinated, personally I would say thats fine - I take it they are not in an area where the garden is regularly visited by lots of other dogs? The vaccinated pup shouldn't be carrying anything that can infect Murphy. I wouldn't recommend the lab going for a long walk through busy doggy areas just before they meet though - maybe the lab should come visit Murphy instead of Murphy going there.

As for the crying, well.....thats pretty much puppy territory I guess. It sounds like you are doing the right thing. You will need to be getting up two or three times in the night to let him out for a pee (assuming you want to get him housetrained at an early stage), he's not old enough to hold it for long at the moment. That could be why he is crying, then again, he might be crying because it guarantees a response from you.

If you know for sure that he is warm enough, has a comfy bed, does not need a pee, and is not hungry, then you have to harden your heart and ignore his crying!! Its only been a couple of days, he's missing his mum and littermates still. Try popping a warm hot-water bottle in his bed with him, or try the ticking clock wrapped in a tea-towel trick! Or you could put a radio on softly to give him some background comfort.

How long it lasts.......ooh, your interrupted nights will go on for a few more days yet. Within a week or so he should cry less, but will still need a pee break in the night if you are not using puppy pads.

Pads are useful if you don't want to keep getting up at night, but ultimately can be a bit confusing for the pup if you want him to toilet outside. If its any consolation, I used puppy pads at night when Nellie was tiny, and she is perfectly well housetrained. We did have a few backward steps at about 13-14 weeks though.

Good luck!

Aww how sweet is he Boxer It sounds like he is missing his mum and any brother and sisters he has left behind. Here's what you do (as recomended in the puppy pack) get a old 'T' shirt and rub you body scent over it and if possible get a ticking clock or watch these items resembles the mother's (familar) scent and the mother's heart beat put the clock under the bedding and the 'T' shirt on top of all the other bedding. and leave in place for 8 weeks. It does work I had one sleepless night with Nipper ( See Avatar) and Nipper is now nearly 2 years old. Don't make the mistake of going down to check on him (as this is what he wants) So the sooner you put the 'T' shirt in and the clock/watch the better for you and you will start to enjoy your sleep again. Also now you have established where Murphy is sleeping and what he sleeps in stick with it and don't change it either Also even at this early stage set house rules that you expect Murphy to live by! By doing this it will make for a happy life for both of you. Enjoy your new addition to your home

Thanks for your advice, it made us feel a lot better. I was amazed that last night we went to bed at 10pm and he didnt cry once! i got up at 5.30 am to check he was ok and he was sat quietly in his basket, he also did a wee & a poo on his puppy pad in the middle of the night, which we think for a 8 week old boxer pup who has only been with us for 3 nights is amazing! he is also really coming out of his shell now, and bringing us a great deal of pleasure already. Thanks again!

Hi That's good! So did you use a old 'T' shirt etc to help him settle ?
And that's a good result that the pads were used, I used puppy pads while Nipper was a pup! And didn't feel they confused things and while she was growing her bladder was getting bigger and that meant she could hold out much longer when this started to happen I then put Nipper out side to do her pee/poo on a regular basis, and every time she got it right either on the pads or outside (when she was older) she would be praised as though there is no tommorow. Never tell Murphy off if you see him doing it on the floor/carpet as this will only set you back. And when you have got this right then you can let him out in the yard for his last one for the night!

You can also start certain training now like Sit, stay, wait, leave Lie down,
come here! etc Its never too early to start this and getting you dog used to music, hoovering and all manner of different sounds. The sooner you
start to do this the better for Murphy long term. Good luck!

I also used that with my pups Bigboy and it worked a treat. Boxer, your little guy is gorgeous and he will give you many years of joy. I adore boxers.

Your baby is beautiful!! Lucy met a boxer pup the other day. He was 8 months and huge. I think he fell in love with Lucy though because he sat and gazed at her with love in his eyes. Hope you keep having good luck with your new baby.

Congratulations on Murphy, he's gorgeous. It won't be long & he'll feel right at home. You just have to ignore him. Only go to him while he's quiet & reward for good behaviour.
