Default Puppy Feeding

Hi everyone. I have a new 7 week old spaniel x labby. The first few days I had her she loved her breakfast and dinner but since yesterday she has not eaten properly. She looks at her food and walks away. Is this comman in puppies or is she just fussy?

Sarah

Hi Sarah Welcome aboard to Dogforum! I would have thought at 7 wks old she ( what's her name?) would be too young to try it on and be fussy! My girl (See Avatar) was fuusy at about 12 - 16 weeks but not 7!! But I may be wrong
Please don't let her graze (even at her age) remove the bowl after 20 mins and let her know there is nothing else going she will soon get the message and eat. If she hasn't started to eat again in another 24 hrs I would take her to the vets for a check up. Is she still playing and drinking water ok?
And do you know when she was last wormed? It's important to have the record of vacinations etc. If in doubt I would speak to the breeder you got her from. Please keep us posted. Hope what ever it is gets sorted and soon

The puppies I've had have never been fussy eaters. At that age I would have thought she would be on 3 meals a day.

As bigboy said put the food bowl down for 10-15 mins, take away what she hasn't eaten & wait until the next meal. Repeat this until she knows that if she waits she'll miss out. If you try & hand feed & try different foods to get her to eat, she will become fussy.

A new puppy should be taken to the vets a day or 2 after bringing it home. Also at her age she should be wormed every 2 weeks until 3 mths then every month or 3 months depending on the worm treatment.

Hey name is Ebby. I've only had her for a few days now. She ate her food the first couple of days but she has been put off since yesterday. She didnt eat anything this morning but was starving when it came to dinner tonight. I ended up wetting down her food tonight to see if that would help. She ate a bit but not all. She is on Eukanuba biscuits twice a day. She was wormed when I picked her up and Saturday. I'm a bit worried bout her though, shes very sulky.

Has she been to the vets yet? Is that the food she was used to? As you say it's a good idea at her age to wet the biscuits. Eukanuba isn't the best food around though. How are her motions, are they normal? If you decide to change her over do it slowly to avoid tummy upset.

Sarah I wouldn't leave it much longer and it will put your mind at rest if you take Ebby to the vets, it may be nothing to worry about but you won't know till you go. And as April rightly says re changing Ebby's do it over a period of a week be gradualy adding more new food to the old and keep reducing the old food till on the last day the next meal will be all newfood

Heh she is having a whinge at the moment. She is going to the vet/pre-school on tuesday night. If she is not getting better by tomorrow will take her down to get her looked at. When we picked her up she was just starting on Eukanuba. She has been full of beans all day running round the backyard and house with her brother.

That's good! There's nothing like a good run round to work a appetite up! She will probably eat ok later

Hi Ebby's Mum and welcome to the forum.

I agree that a vet visit is in order - better safe than sorry. Is she drinking water? If not then that would be a big red flag for me. And if it were me I'd put on on three meals a day. Tiny puppy tummies can't hold very much so they usually need to be fed more frequently. At about 6 months or so I would go to two meals a day.

Best of luck with her and please post pictures!
