Default How much sleep should my 13 wk old Westie pup get?

Hi there

Am new to the boards. Have a 13 wk old adorable westie pup named Toby. Unfortunately he was very ill when we bought him (we didn't realise until 24 hrs after) but thankfully after lots of great medical care and tlc he has made a full recovery.
I am worried today as seems to be really sleeping a lot. I think he has slept about 4 hrs this afternoon and even though I have woken him up he obviously wants to go back to sleep. He is my first puppy so it's all very new to me. He slept 12 hrs through the night too. Thank you

Hi toby

Sorry to hear your little one went through a rough time, how long has it been since his recovery, could he just be catching up with rest or has he been well and perky since recovery and today hes been more sleepy have you had him on a longer than normal walk or has he played more inbetween times and has he eaten and drunk well today.

Sorry for the 100 and 1 questions its just to get a better picture

Was it a serious condition he suffered one thatmay have an effect on his health in the future

There are lots of people who have vast knowledge so with a bit more info Im sure you will get some advice/information but if you are worried trust your instincts and may be just give the vet a ring as hes been so poorly may be worth a phone call at least

Its probably just him having a lazy day

Keep us posted and have you any photos of him a bum photo would be good theres a competion going on the best doggie bum and Im drumming up business . Yes Skunk and Jake Im like a dog with a bone never give up on it .

Take care toby

Most puppies that I have had slept from 18-20 hours a day at that age... of course when they were awake it seemed they were awake for that long too :-)

Hi Janie

He has been running around a lot in the garden this morning so maybe that's what it is? He also had his 2nd jab on Wednesday and his chip.
We got him a month ago and within 24 hrs we were at the vet. He had an eye ulcer, severe case of worms that his stomach was really distended, diarhea (can never spell it), underweight and a general all over infection. Vet gave me her overnight emergency number and was really not sure he would pull through. Thankfully with lots of tlc (yes he has been spoilt rotten ) and medical intervention he has perked up a lot and the vet gave him the all clear when he gave him his 2nd jab wednesday. He did eat his breakfast and lunch but wasn't keen on dinner so I gave him some tuna instead and he has just eaten that.

JGLI ~ that's reassuring thank you. I am a mum to 2 children but you would never guess I am like a nervous wreck with Toby but I do think it's down to that we so nearly lost him

Ahhh he sounds lovely and so lucky to have you guys careing for him, my first dogs were westies so have a soft spot for them my old westie lives with my mum as when I moved out of home he couldnt settle as hed been spoilt rotten as you say by my mum who was able to give him 24/7 time so he lives the life of luxury with her. Sounds like the injection may be adding to him feeling sleepy but thinking about it our pups after playing would always sleep 4 hrs then play again 4hrs sleep etc..

Sounds like he wasnt properly cared for as a weeny baby thank god hes got you now

Hiya and welcome to the forum. Glad you found us. Puppys do tend to sleep for quite a while. Also the jab mite be making him sleepy 2. I have to dogs and when they have their jbs even now and they are older tend to sleep more than they would do normaly. But if your really worried give the vet a quick ring, no harm in checking.
