Talking West highland terrier puppy.

I am looking to get a West highland trerrier; i have had dogs all my life and have always been very lucky with the teprament. My old dog had to be put down 3yrs ago now as he had lymphoma, it took me a good 4 months or so untill i could even stroke another dog.
I have 2 cats now who were here when i had my old boy, so they were used to having a dog around them. I have been doing some resurch in to the westies and think they sound like a good little family dog, i have a son who is 13yrs old.
If any body can give me some more info on these little pups and if they would be alright with my 2 cats i am looking at getting a bitch.

Hi Wendreth and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your old doggy having lymphoma. They say you can never replace the dog that is still in your heart, but you can make your heart bigger to make room for another dog.

Westies are terriers, and terriers are know for seeing small animals as prey. If you were to get an adult Westie who has never been around cats, there is a chance he/she might go after your kitties or at least want to chase them. I think that since your cats are dog savvy that will go a long way in helping a new dog get along with them.

hiya. I dont have a westie but live next door to one. I look after him when the family go away on holiday. He's a great little dog, the only thing is that because he is a small breed dog i think the family thinks he dosn't need as much excersie with has resulted with him beem put on diazipan as he is quite hiper. When i look after him he gets taken out when i take my to spanials and he runs free with them, so he is a little bit calmer. The only other thing the find and i don't no if this only aplies to him or the breed in general but he has super sencitive hearing, witch has made him quite a barker. Don't let this put you off getting one as in every other way he is a fantastic little dog and i would get one in a heart beat. Hope this helps a little. Keep us posted about your little puppy.

I,m so sorry for your lose of your of your other dog.

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and my Gang.

I would do my research well as Westie's are prone to skin allergies. Good Luck and I hope you get a good one. Do keep us posted.

If you had been in Scotland I could have put you in touch with a reputable and ethical breeder.

My best friend's family just lost their sweet Westie a few months ago. She frequently itchy, sensitive skin, especially after a visit to the dog groomer. But she was also very happy, personable and full of fun.

Welcome to the forum. That's what I heard. You need to find a good breeder that has tried to breed out the alergies. Other wise great little dogs.
