Default Toilet Training

Hi, Just joined today and would like some help-our 5 month old Spanial poops on the floor-he uses his wee mat every time he needs to for number 1's, but no such luck with number 2's (even if I change the mat and it's always fresh)! Luckily I have wooden floors, but he needs to learn to go outside. I let him out in the garden all the time as I work from home, but unless I stay out there with him, he just waits by the door to come in again, and never poops either way. Please help-I'll try anything-thought I'd try here before I bought an internet book-are they any good?
thanks in advance
Lou

Hi Lou and welcome to the forum.

Apparently it's more important to your puppy to be close to you, so letting him out only makes him want to come back in. He won't know that you want him to do his thing outside unless you "tell" him, and you may have to tell him quite a few times before he really understands. Why not set up a routine of taking him out first thing in the morning, midmorning, midafternoon, everning and just before bedtime where you go out with him. That way you can praise and reward him when he messes outside and it will sink in that the potty area is outdoors.

Here is a little more info for you that might help.

Good luck!

Hi there, thanks so much for your reply-when you say "tell him" do you mean actually say the words go to the toilet? how will he know what that means..? sorry to be blonde but I've never had a puppy before

Sorry what I meant was pretty much what was in the link.

You have to "tell him" in a way that he can understand. That means that when he does pee or poo, act like he just won the lottery, use a happy voice to praise him and when he is done, fuss over him or give him a treat, or play with him, anything to get his tail thumping. He'll figure out soon enough that messing outside is a GOOD thing to do because it makes you happy and gets him a reward. Also resist the urge to come right back inside when he's done, as this may come across as a punishment ("Hm, As soon as I mess, the fun stops" )

Consistency is important here. As what have been said, having a routine is important. Reward him for a job well done. Do it every time he goes.
