Default Unfortunate circumstances...

Soooo..as I've mentioned we got our yorkie, and haven't taken our other dog home yet.

The yorkie's a very timid little boy, and we'd been working with him little by little on the separation anxiety, and progress has been slow. As a result, my wife has been taking him to work, where a lot of people take their dogs in for a half or even full day. We wanted to do this until our next pup came, that way they could keep each other company.

Well, naturally my wife's office issued a memo today disallowing pets on the premises. Our next thought was to leave him with her mom, which would work except for the fact that everyone in the house is down with a stomach virus.

It looks like we're going to have to leave him at home, and although my wife will be coming home for lunch, I just hate doing it to him while he's still so skittish.

I've got a Kong chew toy, his towels, an old t-shirt of my wife's, we're going to leave the radio on, and we'll try to tire him out before she leaves...is there anything else I can do to ease the situation? Thanks you all!

CJ, the guilty new puppy parent :0/

I think that the best thing for you to do is to ignore him for a while before you leave, so that he settles down to entertain himself with the kong or something, and before you start doing this to put him in a puppy pen or a safe place, where he can't chew anything, or harm himself, and then to leave without making a fuss, just get up and go, the more fuss that you make, the more your puppy will realise that you are going, but if you leave your puppy before to entertain itself, it might not notice your wife going so much, the other things that you are doing I think is great

For whatever it is worth your puppy probably wouldn't care abou the humans having a stomach virus. Hope it goes well though I think you've done about all you can under the circumstances.

Yes do as chaz says. Dogs usually sleep most of the day & I think he will be fine. We had to take Sooty to the vets & Tilba wasn't used to being left at home without her. She was rather anxious about it so I put her in her crate with some food. B4 I left I could hear her barking but all was quiet when we came home.
