Default Stubbornness

Collie Owners

Is is true that Collies can be stubborn? I think I am starting to see that trait in my pup. When he makes up his mind he is not going to do something. He ain't going to do it!!!!

How do you work around this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Often we can wrongly assume dogs are being 'stubborn' or willful when in fact they are confused or we are inadvertantly giving out mixed signals. Sometimes people make the mistake for example of having their pup correctly perform 'sit' in their living room a couple of times, then assume when pup won't sit in the kitchen that he is being stubborn. In fact he has just not yet generalised the 'sit' criteria and cue.

Perhaps you could give specific examples of ways in which your pup is being stubborn so we can offer better suggestions?

When we go for a walk. He knows how to come, but sometimes sits there and won't budge. I try coaxing, pullling a bit, but he refuses.

Do you mean when he is walking on the lead and you want him to keep up, or in an actual recall situation?

I think that yr pup is just being a puppy. He's been with you for only a couple of days and is probably still discovering his way around.Be patient, collies are very intelligent and he will learn all the commands, very fast,no doubt about it.Do very short training sessios and then stop.Ask him to sit every time, you feed him or treat him.By the way,he's a really handsome little guy.

Collies Do Like Things To Do To Occupy Their Time And So They Can Learn As They Love To Do This. They Are Not A Dog To Coop Up In A House All Day Or Tie To A Pole, They Will Bark And Bark To Get Attention Or Be Freed. It Is A Puppy So It Is Going To Constantly Test You Pauline, He Wants To Establish If He Might Be Boss And Leader, So It Is Up To You To Correct Him And Become The Leader As Collies Are Very Smart To Do This Just As Shepherds. Give A Slight Pop On The Leash And Say Heel, Walk On. Make Him Do What You Want As This Is The Critical Time Of Learning Right From Wrong.:d

Actually, we've had him for three weeks now and I've been walking him 2 times a day.

I'm sorry for my frustrated post yesterday. I was feeling kind of discouraged. I think I am reading too many things and getting ahead of myself. I am just going to follow my instincts and not let this bother me so much.

Thank you for your posts and your help.
