Post Teaching puppy to retrieve a ball

How do you train a pup to retieve a ball. He loves to play with one and catches it in his mouth when i bounce it but we wont fetch it back. Il throw it and he'l catch it but then he sits there waiting for me to throw it again but the balls by him.

If I call him back he'l come to me but without the ball.

Ha it's funny, on TV you always see dogs playing fetch, but most aren't born knowing how to do it. It sounds like you're pretty close and you're not the first one to ask. Maybe this recent thread will help.

^ Some dogs are! We never taught Meg and she's great at fetching the ball and bringing it back.

Sooty loves playing fetch, her only problem is she won't put it in your hand, throws it at your feet. Not good for obedience comps.
You start at the end. By getting the dog to hold the ball or whatever, in their mouth. Use a food treat to get them to give the ball back. Gradually lower the ball until it's on the ground at the dog's feet. Eventually you can start to throw it. Dog also needs to know a recall. If the dog won't take the item in it's mouth you play with it & don't let the dog have it. Make it seem so much fun then put it away til the next day. Soon the dog will be champing at the bit to be able to play with you.
