Default Have "flat-faced" breed? PLEASE help

I'm wondering if anyone has a flat-faced breed, Shih Tzu, Peke etc. or know someone who has one, that can help me. Last week my boyfriend gave me a Pekingese. (He was told she was a Peke, but I think it's possible she's not, maybe a mix, I posted pictures of her in the picture section to see what you think). Anyway, she seemed very healthy besides maybe a little cold so I took her to the vet to get her all checked out. The vet told me she was healthy, temp. was normal etc. He said the sniffling was probably because of the breed since they do not have noses like other dogs. After I took her home I noticed that it seemed like she was having trouble breathing, she sounded very congested, and had clear discharge coming from her nose from time to time. I set up another vet appointment after researching online about dogs developing pneumonia. I went to the vet and they prescribed her Clavamox, saying maybe she had a upper respiratory infection. That was two days ago, my puppy has gotten 100% worse. Last night I realized she completely can't breathe through her nose, causing her to not be able to sleep at all. She's exhausted, but can't fall asleep. She lost her appetite and would not eat anything. I called the vet back, and they said to bring her in so they could take x-rays to rule out pneumonia. The x-rays came back fine and the vet said to continue to give her Clavamox. She has not slept or had hardly anything to eat in the past 24 hours. I do not know what to do anymore, I can't take seeing her like this, the vet made me feel like I was overreacting but what am I supposed to do? Someone please tell me they have been through this, anything right now would be helpful. I'm thinking about force feeding her soon.

Thank you

Hi Christine and welcome to the forum.
I'm so sorry your dog is sick! Good for you getting her to the vet so quickly.
I think it would help to know a little more about tis little darling - how old is she, where did she come from etc.
Is she drinking?

Oh honey I am soooo sorry about that darling puppy. She sure looks Peek to me but might not be purebred.?

Did you get a pedigree, AKC papers on her? If she is purebred you should have depending how much he paid and where he got her? I hope he did not buy her at a pet shop or from a seller on a street, like a Back Yard Breeder selling cute puppies cheap???

Sometimes vets do make mistakes, if she is not getting any better, do you have an emergency clinic you can rush her to? We have here like an hour away, must have cash or credit card. It would be very worth while to take her to a special vet as I had an English Bulldog very smashed face. My mom has Peeks, never had any breathing problems that I can remember.

She might have a lung infection inhibiting her breathing to be easy but labored, poor little thing. I would not waste time in getting another vet on her NOW!!! Often we need anothe opinion when a dog-pup is not improving, so please try to find somebody or an emergency number you can call to get her in tonight. The best.....

-Thank you everyone for your help and advice.

-My boyfriend got her from a friend who couldn't keep her because it wasn't working out in their home with their other animals. I personally have never spoken to that family so I am thinking unfortunately she came from a less than great breeder or a store, since she doesn't have papers and doesn't really seem to be the breed they said she was. Right now none of that matters to me because I just want to make sure she gets better as soon as possible.

-Last night I decided to call an emergency vet that is in a town about 30 minutes from me. I explained the situation and they said they believed my vet was correct. They explained to me she wasn't eating because she was too exhausted from the lack of sleep. They told me to give her a steam bath to help her nose congestion break up, and to give her NutriStat through a syringe to keep her blood sugar up so she wouldn't go into Hyperglycemic shock. They said it's pretty much a waiting game and continue to give her medicine, and she will get better soon. Of course they throw in if she gets worse to bring her in.

-After giving her the NutriStat I kept her mouth open with my finger so she could sleep and breathe through her mouth. It actually worked and after a little bit of sleep she woke up and ate her food and drank her water. Today she seems a bit better, I just can't wait until she's all better.

I'l let you know when she's all better =)

I'm glad you got a second opinion and more info. Also that she seems to be doing better. Make sure she gets enough water whatever you do. And I'd try to get food into her 4 times a day.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

I'm glad you got a 2nd opinion. That was what I was thinking from your 1st post. I hope she continues to improve. There's nothing worse than having a sick pet or young child. Let us know how she's going.

Thanks so much for all the great advice. I've only ever had a family dog, which was a Rott so it's a bit different from this tiny baby! She's continuing to do a little better each day. Can't wait until she's back to normal!
