Default Experienced dog owner who has never had a puppy

The last puppy ( under 6 months) was when I was 4 ... I am getting a lovely mini daushound ... she turned five weeks today and it appears she will be with me in under a week... VET suggested her coming home to me as soon as she is weaned( I took her for her first nail trim and worming today)... SO HOW do you care for a 5-6 week old

It is best to have her stay with her litter until she is 8 to 10 weeks old. Taking a pup away from the litter early causes them to not understand doggie language as well as pups who stay with the litter longer. Vets understand medicine but are often woefully lacking in understanding behavior. I don't know a person who has performance dogs who would be happy with a breeder who released a puppy short of 8 weeks.

As for what to do, I suggest you leave the pup with the litter till 8 weeks and in the meantime, read all the posts on puppies here on the boards. It's loaded with information.

Trust me, this puppy NEEDS to leave the home. The vet doesn't think the people are smart enough to care for the puppies....and I am VERY inclined to agree. Moron is the term that comes to mind. (I honestly would not be that surprised if she stayed with the people until 8 weeks & did not survive)

I really would like them to have her till 10-12 weeks but that wont happen... When my dog picked her out( yes she picked her out) they started with if mom runs out of milk you will get her 4-5 weeks ... I had them up to 8 weeks but vet does know both parties and said she would rather have to instruct me than for the puppy to be left with them for 8 weeks... see at age 5 weeks only mine has seen a vet for even a look see visit..

I see. If the breeders are not good and the pup is in danger, then yes, it's best to go with you. It is awfully young, but there are things you can do to help make up for the loss of learning with the siblings. After the pup is older, puppy class with puppy playtime can help the little one learn some of the doggie language it will be missing out on.

Very sad that it has had such a dangerous start on life, but great that you're in the picture now. It used to be common practice to have pups places at six weeks of age. You may want to look at the Esbillac (sp?) weaning formula to feed along with dry food, if its not eating well. They sell it at Petsmart, and it's a mush formula, if memory serves me. Talk to the vet about feeding at that age. He/she may recommend soft food or wetting the kibble or something else.

Otherwise you'll treat the little one just like an 8 week old - only taking things a bit slower.

I think the RSPCA needs to know about this. if the breeder cant look after them then the mum and all pups need to be moved to a safe place.

Sharky, see if you can find a serious person with either littermates that has bought a pup too, alternative someone else that might HAVE puppies in your area and wouldnt mind yours joining for said reason. Or advertise after someone who has like 8-12 weeks old pup for playmates, the sooner you can have it with other young pups th ebetter. It will help to make up for th eloss of this.

Now it will be up to YOU to teach it bite inhibition..

Not sure if anyone has warned you about that, when the puppy nips/bites SQUEAL, stop the play and walk away, be CONSISTENT about that from day one. That will make the dog better with people and other dogs. My pitbull for example she is a rescue straight off the street, and she has horrible bite inhibition. My big dog put down the limit emidately, with humans, she has improved but she often can go into a nipping game despite being a year old where it HURTS. I wish I knew how my dog did it..

That will be one of the most important lessons to learn together with socialisation so she can funciton well with other dogs. Missy don't she has introduction time for about 2 weeks before she can play somewha tnicely with them.. trust me you wanna avoid that...

Good luck with you rlittle one, I hope things work out for you I will keep fingers crossed!! and dont forget to post pictures..

OMG I have never heard of such Breeders such as lately. One never let a pup go that young, and what the heck did they breed in the first place if they are that stupid??????????

It makes me furious to read stuff like this, pups need to be with their litter mates, mom is not so important as I wean mine early but they stay together. Your getting a small breed, so that little pup will be tiny, fragile and hopefully it has been wormed, shot given and not exposed to anything. I do NOT allow anybody to stick their heads in my whelp room till 2 weeks are gone because of carrying Parvo.

Gosh, I sure hope all goes well. What I suggest you get is a good milk replacer to put in its food for a couple weeks just because. I personally would do that to keep it from falling behind on growth, weight, etc.

If you need any help, just ask me as I have about all the experience of raising young pups to weaning to leave and bottle feeding to weaning to food. The best of luck......

FYI: when you take to vet for shots, do not let it down on the floor or let anybody touch it or bring a dog up to it because of Parvo, it is running rapid now for some reason and I advise my customers the same even after one shot for the second, to watch, be so careful till it get 3 shots and a Rabi.

Are these people honest breeders or was this just a backyard mating? If they are breeders someone needs to be contacted and they need to be turned in. This is just a shame.

Good luck to you and the pup. At least she has you on her side now!
