Default What to look for in a healthy Lab pup?

Im in the process of looking for my first Labrador puppy, but unsure where the best place to buy from, breeder or joe public? any pro/cons from either?
Im probably going to be looking for a chocolate bitch, she wont be used for breeding or entered into any shows.

Regards Adam.

I would make sure that they have had the relevant health checks done,

Its a good idea to visit some local shows and speak to Breeders/and/or exhibitors there, even if you are not going to show , it is a good place to start and it is a good way of seeing the dogs and getting information and sussing out temperaments etc. and spotting which lines you like and which you don't.

Good luck

I would also suggest the Kennel Club (http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/) would be a good place to start looking too. I would avoid buying from 'just anyone' as you can never guarentee what your dog will grown up like as a lot of these people breed for profit over good breeding lines.

Whatever you decide, make sure you see the pup with its parents, and sometimes they will even have the grandparents. If all parents have good temprements, are registered, and the facilities seem clean and well managed, usually you have found a good litter to pick from.

Avoid buying from a breeder who seems hesitant to let you see the parents, a good breeder will be able to answer any questions and see anything you like.

Good luck!

HIP SCORE! you need to make sure it has a very good hip score, labbys are known to have bad hips, sometimes even need replacing most good breeders will have dogs that have a good hip score and you really NEED to go for them, certainly don't find one from the public or anywhere else, breeders (well most of them) know what they are doing! and know the dogs well (family line anyway)
