Default Diet for a 5 wk daschund.

Hi, my puppy is 5 weeks old and I've been told he's too young to be taken away from his mother. What is the best food and drink for him? He's a daschund.

Most breeders won't release puppies until around 8 weeks. At five weeks your pup may well be weaned but will miss out on important socialisation with his siblings and discipline from Mum. Assuming he is weaned and has no other health issues a good quality puppy food should be all he needs. The best idea would be to check with the breeder if possible to see what type of food he has been getting since a sudden change can upset his system.

You could also give him Pedigree Chum Puppy Porridge, if he is struggling with the complete.

Did his breeder not give you advice on feeding?

I'm not sure what the breeder said cause I wasn't there when my mother got him. She came home with my nephew and had the puppy wrapped in towels keeping him warm.

OMG!!! Mine do not get vetted till six weeks, hope this poor puppy had a parvo shot, distemper, etc.?
This is way toooo young to leave the litter and momma. If weaned well enough to eat, I would still crushed or grind the puppy food, Pro Plan Chicken n rice with canned milk and one egg mixed daily. Half can milk, half sterlized water, one egg mix over the ground up puppy food.

I would get it vetted and its first set of shots, wormed, etc. Good luck. I would also get some liquid vitamins and add to mix of milk and egg for the day, make this every day to get a good or better start at this age.
