Default Whelping

Still not sure if this is in the right thread or not, but I am sure someone will put me right.

A Cypriot friend near me has just found out that one of her bitches is in whelp and the vet refuses to abort the puppies. My friend is distraught as she has avoided this for a few years (even though I had just convinced her to have both the bitches spayed). I have told her I will help with the whelping, although it has been a number of years since I last helped a bitch whelp.

Most Cypriots believe you just leave the bitch on her own in a dark room and she will do her own thing then you can get rid of the pups .

I want to help her and Coco (the bitch) as much as possible and have told her what I know, but for the life of me I can't ever remember severing the umbilical cord - normally when I have aided in the delivery and broken the sac the bitch has done the rest. Can anyone advise on this aspect.

Obviously I know that all the afterbirths have to be accounted for and how to break the sac, even to assisting if the birth is breach, but my mind has gone complete blank with regard to the cord so any advice would really be appreciated - pups not due for a little while yet.

This really is a fantastic site with great advice when needed and will post an update on my own Cyprus Poodle's antics and where we are now with her.

Thanks in advance for any advice, as I do not think leaving a bitch in a darkened room on her own will help matters as the owner loves her dogs and just wants the best for them (okay one of them, as the other one has been spayed and believe me that is a fete accomplait in itself with Cypriots as it is against the grain for them to have animals neutered).

I agree, too many things can go wrong leaving a bitch to do it all herself.
Sometimes something as simple as clearing the mouth can mean the difference between life and death for a newborn.

Sometimes the mom is quick to sever the cord and other times you have to do it yourself. I prefer to cut it with a sterilized scissors and leave it a little long (about one inch) then tie it off closer with cotton sewing thread. Then I thoroughly clean the area with an antiseptic such as alcohol, but even listerine mouthwash will do in a pinch.

You can get a clamp to cut the cord, but I leave the mother to chew it as she cleans the puppy. I grab the saks and dispose in a box, check them after the mom is working with the pup, then dispose in a garbage bag. I pick up the pup and rub it hard with a clean white towel and let it scream as this is good for the heart. The louder it hollers the better. I might dab some bedadine on navel but the mom usually just cleans it off. Mine lick and lick and clean and clean. I suck out with suction cup I have of fluids in its mouth also. I wipe the mom best I can with warm water and cloth for next one in hour or two. Now I work on this pup to suckle milk. Some can be born without a pallet and if u do not work on it to know it can suck and drink milk, it will starve and die. If I see feet coming I help in lightly pressure of the bulb coming with both hands, never lost one yet like that. It takes little longer labor also. I sit down and watch and make sure I keep putting lil one on milk till I am certain it is doing fine. I have pig rails up in each box of two. I let the mom with lights on in whelping room do most, I am there just in case. I do try and grab the placenta sak so she is not eating too many. I will give her a whipped egg with tbsp of sugar as a pick up after a few pups, usually I get large litters of nine or so. Hope this helps. I would never put the mom in a dark room however. I am a mother hen to be there and help and must see good, I weigh each pup, mark with band, put time, pound usually mine are a pound plus ounces of, and band color in my book. I might make a note of easy birth or lil bit of trouble, back legs first, I just make notes so I know.

Thanks for the advice. My friend knows where I am and I have told her I will be there for her no matter what the time of day or night. It will be interesting to see what the pups are like because Mum is a Cyprus Poodle and Dad is a Yorkshire Terrier - know the Dad well, he is the local stud and is always around if a bitch is in season - jumps a three foot wall with grace.

Hopefully this will be the one and only litter that the bitch has.

My friend isn't happy about it either, it happened whilst she was on holiday and her parents were looking after the house and dogs. If she could have got them aborted she would have done, but the vet would not do it with her as she is too far along apparently, whereas the other bitch has been spayed now whilst aborting the pups.

There is a major problem on the island with animals as Cypriots do not believe in neutering their animals so it is not the "designer dog" that I am worried about but how to get the pups homes as there are so many of them - normally they are just dumped, sometimes (if they are lucky) outside one of the two shelters, or just put in bags and thrown in the rubbish. Kittens are treated exactly the same, lots of friends have rescued kittens and hand fed them, then found them homes - mostly with British who then get them neutered and the pups/kittens are with a home for life - if they are not poisoned in the meantime. At least I have talked her into getting both of them spayed which in itself is a miracle and she wants me to help her whelp the pups rather than leave the bitch in a dark room as her other friends have told her - obviously she cares about her dogs.

Sorry I have gone off topic, but your comment was not what I expected as it is a never ending battle here with dumped and stray dogs/ferral cats and I am only trying to help rather than have a bitch whelp on her own.
