I don't know much about the breed but here's an AKC link:

Miniature Schnauzer

I hope there are others who know more about the breed. Good luck with the search.

Make sure you research all breeders you are considering to make sure you get a quality dog. You will want to make sure they do health testing, they breed for the betterment of the breed not for money, they can show you both parents, etc etc...

Never buy from a Pet Store. Contact the breed club and ask for breeder names and references.

Have you tried dogbreedinfo.com? It has every breed and then some on it. Other than that they are scarce and high priced, but so cute. Good luck.

Hi

I used to have a mini schnauzer - what a gorgeous dog they are!

I got him from a breeder in Yorkshire.

I can tell you lots about the breed - they're certainly headstrong and scamps....but a lovely dog if you socialise them adequately early on. Without tons of socialisation some of them seem to have problems with other dogs or are extra timid with people. I've met lots of schnauzers and the ones who are the best are those who were taken out and met lots of people and other dogs from day one (like any puppy I suppose, but important with this breed IMHO).

Be careful of toy-minis - I've seen some schnauzers which were WAY smaller than the breed standard. My adult male was 13" as it should be, but many people insisted he wasn't a true mini.....they were wrong according to the breed standard.

A schnauzer is difficult to train to return to you off the lead. Most of the ones I've met will return only when they want to - so its essential that that part of training is done with them a lot early on - recall with no options.

Some bark a fair bit, but if you train them to bark and then stop barking, I found no issue there.

Monty (my mini schnauzer) was great with kids and a wonderful family pet, he loved long walks but didn't need quite as much as some really large breeds. They are NOT house dogs or lap dogs though. They do need walks frequently and have lots of energy.

Dawn (will PM you breeder details if you wish....plus my comments on that particular breeder which I'll keep off the public forum)
