Default What do you make of this?

Minsc has not once shown a subordinate side when meeting other dogs even adult dogs. Most puppies will at least lay down and roll over an their side if not on their back but not him. There is a King Charles that he interacts with at times that has rolled him on his back and he will stay that way as long as the King Charles stands over him but as soon as the other dogs moves he is back up and at it again. Even at 11 weeks old he was this way.

He's not agressive in a mean way toward other dogs but he plays very agressively with them, not growling snapping etc but always advancing and always trying to "be on top" and even trying to mount them.

I'm not real sure what to think about a puppy that doesn't show any insubordination to older and larger dogs.

I would not worry too much about it, he is not showing aggression so continue on with your training and I am sure he will be fine!

I don't make much of it with Ozzy. He's just a very confident dog & was the same way as a puppy. I don't attach dominance/submissive issues along with those behaviors unless there's some form of aggression attached to it. There are others who put a whole lot more emphasis on "pack structure" — I just don't happen to think it applies to all dogs in all situations (even if aggression is present). IMO, people are a bit misguided in the emphasis they place on play gestures — Domesticated dogs/puppies aren't their ancestors & they don't spend their lives trying to find their place in the heirarchy of every encounter.

CountryGirl it sounds like he is showing it as necessary. If the King Charles wants Minsc on his back, he shows his belly. But when they are finished with their "body language" conversation, Minsc goes back to normal behavior. So it sounds to me like you have nothing to worry about.

I agree with Katz. At 11 weeks I am glad you pup is feeling confident and happy in his interactions with other dogs. He may still be at the 'puppy license' stage as far as most other dogs go, ie because he is so young they let him get away with murder. As he gets a little older this tends to wear off, and you may see other adult dogs becoming slightly less tolerant. This is normal and natural and he may receive some harmless corrections from the older dogs which will help him to become slightly less pushy.

I'll never forget Ozzy's first encounter with a dog who wasn't amused by his antics either. It was about a 120 lb. Newfy that I didn't know was around the corner. Ozzy just zoomed right up on him & this HUGE BARK came out of that dog & if dogs could blush, Ozzy would have been beet red. It was his first eye opener & he became quite respectful in an instant. I still wouldn't call it submissive, but he thought before approach & began "asking" the other dogs present if he could approach.

Minsc is 20 weeks old now, almost 5 months so I don't think that he's getting complete puppy leeway anymore. LOL

i really wish that he could just get off leash with a bunch of different dogs, not at the same time but I think that a leash just changes attitudes. It's so hard to get a chance to socialize him with other dogs and I think that he needs that more than people. He's met well over 100 different people now, babies, old people different races, people dressed funny.

We run into a lot of different dogs in our walks but they are in fences and I don't take him in the yards to get up to the fences. At puppy kindergarten he gets to be around the others but still on leashes.

Yeah, yeah I worry too much. I just want him to be the best that he can be.

Good for you! I think off lead socialisation is important for most pups too, and as a bonus you usually get a nice tired well behaved puppy back after playtime. Do you have any friends who have dogs you could invite around or visit in an enclosed garden? What about grabbing some phone numbers from others at puppy class who might welcome a 'play date'?
