Question Puppy toileting

Hi was am hoping someone has some good advice on my 11 week old puppy. He is a lovely West highland terrier and is becoming really good at toileting in the garden during the day. My problem is, is that at night when we go to bed we put puppy into a dog crate and when we wake in the morning he has poo in his crate. We are trying the method of not letting him eat after 7pm but it's not working.
If anyone has any tips please let me know. many thanks.

First off welcome to the forum I hope you like it here we are a friendly forum we would love to see pics off your cute boy

It sounds like the crate you have him is to big, you need a smaller crate so he cant sleep in one place and wee in the other. It could be the crate size or he couldent hold long enough how every so often do you take him out to the toilet?????

I'd like to mention something I remember reading : As I recall I heard that puppies really aren't physically able to control their bladders for extended lenghts of time and should be given the opportunity to relieve themselves every three hours at the least . The amount of control the pup has increases as the dog matures .

I can't quote a source , just something I remember hearing .

I have a schedule worked out where I will be getting up to give the pup a chance to go during the night. Of course I would rather not if it's not necessary but I want the pup to be able to go outside everytime and not put in the position of having no choice but to go in the house .

anyone else hear of this ?

Yes I heard that! In a few posts I cant find one tho when pups are little they can not control them selves from going because there bladders are weak when there pups I heard someone say that somwhere.... And I think its true.

I'm wondering whether different breeds hold on for longer.

I can honestly say Pebble has not wee'd or poo'd once during the night in his crate and he's in there for about 8 hours.

It would make sense to say bigger pups hold on longer than small pups due to the size of their bladder.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Great to have you with us. 11 weeks old is too young to expect a pup to hold it through the night.

I would suggest a big play session outdoors before taking your pup to his crate for the night & try to get him to eliminate before you bring him back indoors. Adjusting his meal times might help too.
