Males start to mature at around 6 months but don't have cycles the way females do. When a male matures it's usually when he lifts his leg to pee and starts marking his territory by doing that.

He will also show a greater interest in females at that time as well.

Yep only females get them, but a matured non spayed dogs show interest in female dogs and when females are in heat they do it only in there time period but a male dog will do it whenever with a female dog if he is not spayed.

I hope I helped.

A male will still try to mount a female even if he has been neutered. The difference is if he is spayed they will not procreate and therefore no puppies, but he will still make the attempt. The males do not have a cycle and sometimes even mount other males, neutering does not stop this.

Normally even intact males do not bother females that aren't in heat.

The scent of a female in heat is what draws their interest. If there's no scent, they go on about their own business and generally do not pester the females with mounting behavior with breeding in mind.

However the scent of a female in heat is so strong that if there is a female in heat within several blocks; an intact male may become confused and attempt to mount a female that isn't actually in heat.

When that happens the male isn't usually as determined as he would be if he were in close proximity to a female that is actually in heat. In these cases an air snap and a growl frow the female will usually convince him to mind his own business. Even an intact male dog will not force himself on a female that isn't completely receptive. However when a female dog is in the right stage of the heat cycle; they're almost always receptive to any male that happens along.

There are always exceptions of course! But an intact male dog that has been raised properly can easily live with female dogs and never even think of mounting them with the intention of breeding unless they're in heat.

Intact male dogs do not have cycles. Any time they scent a female in heat they're ready to breed immediately!

It's a good idea to get your male spayed before he starts to lift his leg to pee. The world doesn't need any more unwanted puppies. There's just not enough good homes to go around.

Sorry can't agree with it being a good idea to have a male puppy neutered. I dont' believe in it except for health reasons. If you are a responsible owner you will not allow your male to bring any unwanted puppies into the world. I have had dogs for over 30 years and have never had a male neutered and none of my males have ever been the cause of unwanted puppies adding to the dog population.
So sorry I don't think its such a good idea.

That you know of

Just kidding!!!

Seriously though, how do you ensure that your males don't get out and mate? We've always had female dogs in our family. Knuckles is the first male... From what I've heard, it's very hard to control them if they can sense a female on heat.
