Default What age should puppy come out of crate

Hi dog lovers!!

Our puppy Hamilton is still in his crate at 14 weeks old. He is getting used to letting us know when he wants to go out to the toilet, but if I left him out in the day then goodness knows what mess I would come home too!!!

Can you tell us a little more about how you have been using the crate?
Does he sleep there?
Where is the crate?
Is he in the crate during the day and if so, how long?

We crate hamilton at night when we go to bed and in the day when we go to work. I work from home alot, so he is not in there in the day a great deal and some days he goes to work with my partner.
We gave him treats to go in his crate originally, but now he goes in it by himself and knows when to.
It is situated in the lounge dounstairs.
We leave the cate open when we are in the house and he happily goes in and out of it as he pleases!! we are shortly going to try and leave him out of the crate during the night but when we have made sure there is no damage he an do to himself or anything in that area!!

Unless you have a completely secure area with washable floors I wouldn't risk it until he's at least 6 months old. Deciding when to leave him out at night will most likely be trial and error. Many dogs aren't trustworthy yet by the time they're 2 years old and others seem to get it right away.

I agree atleast 6 months.......And some dogs start to really love there crates and when there older they somtimes still love there crate..........

When i get a pup and he has been toilet trained i will still let him live in the crate........Well sleep i will just have the door open

I didn't crate train Ozzy but I was home virtually 24/7 with him. I took him out round the clock until he was able to hold it all night. When I did leave the house, I left him gated in the kitchen & tried short trips away with puppy proofed house around the age of 8 months.

I didn't leave him roam completely free for any extended periods until he was over 10 months for more than 30 minutes or so. After that I gradually increased his freedom until he was about 1 year old & he's been reliable ever since.
