Default My dog the book reader ... err chewer

So kay started something new over the last few days - she's been borrowing books and dvds only she's not very good about returning them in the same condition she found them. She seems to have a particular distaste (or maybe she really likes it) for the xmen dvd's as she pulled both of those out and chewed on them. Fortunately only the packaging got damaged not the discs. I cant say the same for the books she pulled off the shelf.

I think she's doing this for 2 reasons.

1. she wants attention - because as soon as i see her with it i go to grab it and she trys to start a game of chase. I'm not sure how to handle that one since i dont want to ignore her and just ler her keep chewing on the book/dvd.

2. i think she might also do it out or boredom, since she's done it a few times when i wasnt home. I leave all her chew toys out before i leave, but apparently books and dvds are more fun to chew.

For now, i put my bicycle and a gate in front of the book shelf, but i dont have anything to block off the dvds. I started putting the lower ones higher up for now. But ideally i dont want to have to put everything in the house 5 feet off the floor to keep it safe from the 4 legged paper shredder. I'd rather get her trained not to take stuff that doesnt belong to her. The only other thing i can think of trying would be to spray some bitter apple spray on the dvd's ... i'll try putting a bit on the books but obviously i cant get them too wet.

Any other thoughts on how to handle this?

I vote it is #1

The first key to a cure is prevention. So, puppy proofing is in order. If she doesn't have access then she's not going to get into any trouble.

Introduce objects she can chew & reward her for doing so. Then, put the odd item around the house discreetly & watch her like a hawk. The trick here is to catch her INSTANTLY (not after she's had a minute or two to chew) & correct her & replace the object with something she's allowed to chew & praise accordingly.

Good luck! Instead of chase next time. Squeal really, really big in a high pitched voice & run away from her (fall down & keep squealing if you have to do that to get her attention from the object and on to you). Then, grab the object, put it away & replace with a desirable chewy object.

And be sure to have someone videotaping your squeal, chase, fall and replace so we can use it as a demo for future posters with the same problem!

Good suggestions Katz!
