Default Chewing her bed !

Penny is now nearly 9 months' old, a Sheltie. She is gorgeous, but has one naughty habit - she chews the cushion which is in her dog bed during the night. She pulls out the stuffing and spreads it all over the floor (looks like it's been snowing when we get up) ! She has all her adult teeth and isn't chewing anything else, but how can we stop her without having to resort to making her sleep on the hard floor without a bed?

they sell a spray called bitter apple,if you spray a new bed with it in one spot or two, the pup probably won't chew the bed any more but give her some chew toys, if the pup is a hard chewer becareful what you get, you don't wan't the pup swallowing the insides of that bed,or the toys

This is a hard one. Bitter apple, etc. might help so do give it a try. However, the last bed I purchased for Ozzy (#3) lasted about 10 minutes before it went to the trash. He gets to choose the floor or the sofa ... whichever he prefers. He doesn't feel the need to chew on those.

I guess it depends on whether Penny dog is shredding the bed for the sheer joy of shredding or because she does not like the feel of the cushion. Both of mine dearly love to shred stuffed toys, but so far have not shredded beds. What is the cloth like on the cushion?

Hehe.

I would try not giving a bed for a while, then Sloowly introduce it back to the dog. If it gets chewed, take it away and start over. Hopefully the dog will realize the connection between chew=bed taken away.

Thank you all for your replies. Penny's cover on her cushion is just thick cotton - she first chews through that and next the cushion itself, then pulls out the stuffing. We have decided to take it away for a while, so she will have to sleep on the hard floor of the bed I'm afraid. She has chewy things in her bed, but prefers the cushion! Hopefully she will outgrow this habit. Thanks all.

Yr best bet is to make sure to find one that it has a fabric liner on it and spray the bed with some bitter apple. Also do remember that when there's a will there's a way. When you spray it with bittle apple, put some in her mouth and let her see what you are spraying.

Yeah Cassie did that with her first bed. It became so forlorn-looking (she totally removed ALL the stuffing) I finally bought her a new one - which she has mostly left alone. It's a different type of bed, though the same type of covering. I put a $5 wal-mart 'batman' fleecie over it, and she has barely touched it. She wasn't really young enough when we got the first one to be 'teething', so I figure she just didn't like it as much

Well just a thought- if the cover were something fleecy like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Petco-Bed-Buddie...QQcmdZViewItem
kind of fake lambs wool perhaps she would not chew it. I think there is a good chance she does not like the feel of it and is trying to make it softer.

Thanks again everyone. We are putting an old piece of carpet in there tonight and if that doesn't work she will have nothing in there for a while.
