Hiya, I am a new member, so be gentle, I'm from Northumberland in North East England, Two Yorkshire terriers, one Lucy 6 years old, then a pup Millie 7 weeks. Thereby lies a tale, we lost a yorky to old age several weeks ago, and we knew Lucy would pine, so we took the decision to have another puppy(Millie).

But theres a problem, Lucy is, unusually for a terrier, very gentle and timid, and the pup is very overbearing even at this early age. So any suggestions as to making a duo out of this pairing. I know its only been a week since Millie arrived but Lucy is very nervous, and tries to escape when Millie gets in her comfort zone. I've tried sitting near Lucy trying to coax her with her favourite dog chocolate, but its not working.

My worry being that Lucy wont accept the pup as a companion, and I'll be gutted, because even though Lucy is a poppet and one of the nicest dogs we've ever owned, feisty dogs I like as well!

So please can anyone give us the formula, and help.

Welcome!

Would love to see some pictures of Lucy and Millie.

I cannot help you with your problem unfortunately. I have no experience in owning two dogs at a time. I hope to one day though!

Hi Marygwen and
I also do not know what to offer in the way of advice, as older dogs will normally put a pup in their place. It may be the young age of Millie. At 7 wks they still have the "puppy license", which gets revoked around 4 months. So it may be that Lucy is putting up with it for now, but when the time comes that Lucy feels that Millie is old enough to know better how to behave and show respect for the elder dog, you may hear a growl or two.

Hello & welcome to the forum. It's a long time since Sooty came to live with us, 6 1/2 yrs. April was 7 1/2 at the time.
April ignored, ran away from Sooty for the 1st 4 days then started to acknowledge her. April would sit on top of Sooty, looked like a hen on her chickens. We never had any major problems. April is my dog & Sooty is my sons.
The main thing is to have time with your older dog, don't make her feel left out. I know puppies are a lot of work, but when Millie's asleep you can play with Lucy. As said, Lucy will put her in her place. Search the net for articles on introducing a new puppy, if you can't find anything here.

Welcome to DogForum.org.

Give Lucy time, everything is so new for her and pups can be so busy that perhsps she feels overwhelmed. One thing you need to make sure of is that Lucy feel she si the number one dog; feed her first and away from the pup, always greet her first when you come home or into a room where both may be; always pat her first. Take both outside to play have two toys ,ake sure Lucy gets her toy first. It can take weeks perhaps month but they will accept each other and thing will be better. Best wishes and please post some pics of your two.
