Default Hi all.

Hi everyone,

I'm Maggie I'm 36 and am from London. I live with my hubby and three boys. I joined this forum as we are (in two weeks) hoping to buy a Puppy. We're looking for a puppy that will grow into a medium sized dog, but at this present time we haven't decided what breed to go for? So I am going to need all the advice I can get from you guys.

We have researched and picked out two breeds, both have Positive & negative traits. What I have said below, is what we have read from various sources. We have no experience of these two dog breeds, so I am hoping you guys can help us.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier ~ although is a loving family pet, it is prone to attack other dogs. (that's all I need when walking the dog.)

Springer Spaniels ~ Loving adorable family pets but are prone to illness ie: Eye problems, hip problems and ear infections etc..... (does that mean they fall ill often?)

As you can see we need some help, there are most probably a lot of other breeds out there we have over looked. But we want a medium sized dog as our house isn't that big, although we have a large garden and a park five minutes from where we live.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi First od all welcome to the forum from me and my Gang .

Whilst the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the Springer Spaniel are two lovely breeds, I would not recommend either of them to a first time dog owner. All puppies are hard work, but staffies and springers are to me more for an experienced owner but at the end of the day the choice is yours and I wish you luck with whatever breed you eventually go for. I would suggest a Cocker Spaniel instead of a Springer for a first time owner and if a Terrier I woud say a Jack Russell . Just my humble opinion.

Hi Maggie! Welcome! Great to have you with us!

It is good that you are taking your time when deciding what breed of dog is best for you & your family. Where did you look at all the different breeds? We might be able to offer some good places to look for more info & possibly additional breeds.

I have to agree, for the most part, with Borzoi Mad on her comments above.

I've had a Staffie and he was a wonderful dog. He was sweet, loving, and far from aggressive. However, he was a little hellion until he had made it through quite a bit of training & at times I was ready to throw in the towel. He was so strong & powerful, that he almost won the battle of who was training whom. I can't say recommend that breed as a good choice for first time dog owners or even those inexperienced with training & socialization of a powerful, strong-willed breed.

Springer Spaniels are wonderful dogs too but have tons of energy & require lots of outdoor activities.

Based on what you've said above, I can't say either of those two breeds would be my top two recommendations for you (probably not in my top 30). But, if I had to choose between the two breeds, I'd recommend the Springer.

What kind of activities do you plan to do with your dog? Do you intend to go to formal obedience classes? How much time do you have to spend with your puppy training? excersizing? etc. Do you enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, long walks, short walks? Possibly the answers to these questions might help us recommend breeds we think you would also like.

Hi Maggie, and
I cannot offer you any comment on your choice of breeds. perhaps if you gave us some of your considerations that led your your narrowing it down to the Staffie or the Springer some of the members might be able to provide some more guidance.
