Smile Still looking for my special pooch!

Hi There!

My name is Andy and I'm just moving to Toronto, ON, Canada this month on my own. I work with Computer (Oddly enough I started off as a Medical student...) and I have been aching to get a Dog for quite sometime. I grew up with a Permanent Border Collie/Lab/Shepard female named Lacy-Anna who lived ot be 15 before she needed to be put down for a cumulative amount of reasons. We were sort of an unofficial animal shelter since my Mom moved us out into the country from Toronto. Alot of people started leaving abandoned animals with us and we had an Army of Tabby cats I called "my evil army of puffies.' We raised birds that had been knocked out of their nests, Baby rabbits disturbed by humans and abandoned by their mothers, several dogs, etc. We only ever seemed to get stuck with the Cats and eventually just made them part of the family. All the others were either set-free once they were ready (i.e. able to fly) or adopted. We dealt with alot of senior dogs that people didn't want to pay vet bills for and young puppies that 'couldn't be trained' after some quality time with my mom and her ever-prevalent 'Queen of the Creatures' attitude, they learned some manners and ended up charming the pants of prospective owners at some point.

But Lacy was OUR dog and I miss having her around. Shortly after she died we had an unfortunate accident with a very irresponsible pet-sitter that cost us the lives of all of our cats. Since then we've sort of 'retired' as my mom is getting older. We have two cats (lowest number ever) and thats all. I miss having a Dog but I held off on getting because I moved around frequently for school and I didn't feel like I was responsible enough to deal with one on my own.

But now that things are slowing down a bit, I feel ready and I feel like I can provide a more than sufficient amount of support for a dog. However, I still havn't found one that I am really feeling a connection to yet. I'd prefer to adopt an unwanted dog, or an overlooked dog rather than purchase one. Truth be told, the only years of Lacies life I wasn't nuts abut her were her Puppy-Baby days! But i wouldn't say no to the right pup.

My expierience is mainly with larger dogs, it seemed to me that most of what ended up with us were Rottis, Labs,Retreivers, all the mixes in between and a strange prevelance of German Shepards(mixed, usually, but we did care for a senior purebred who was deaf that no one wanted anymore. We cared for him until he passed away). So Im looking for something in that size range.

wow this is long! if you ahd nothing to read, YOU DO NOW!

Anyway, I'm a little out of practice with Pooches and I've been doing alot of reading and reasearching on rearing, training and all the other fancy things only a Dog-Owner could tell you. So I thought I'd start poking around here, see what all the EXPERTS have to say!

Looking forward to snooping out all your wisdom! When I find the right pooch, I'll be sure to introduce her/him to you!

-Andy

Hi Andy, and welcome!
If you are not that into puppies, it sounds like you may want to head on over to your local shelter. Lots of people get "cute puppies", especially the larger breeds, and then don't train them or don't have time for them and so dump them off at about 1yr of age. The right owner can help them become great dogs. And if you go there, chances are the dog will pick you, if you know what I mean.

Wow.

I feel like a big silly. I was looking for so long, then I finally post it and POOF he drops into my lap!

Meet Valentine.

He's the little Tan one with the black nose.

I'd been looking for a pooch for some time, and like I said before I wasn't keen on puppies. Its beenover 15 years since i dealt continuously with a REAL puppy. I had looked on PetFinder and was even seriously looking at purchasing a pure-bred German Shepherd from my friend who has a small breeding kennel on his farm. I figured I'd end up taking one of his 'adolescent' ones that he hadn't managed to sell. I was mainly looking in the Toronto area but since I'm up visiting my Mom, I thought earlier this morning I'd look here. A single litter of puppies was available and I figured "Can't hurt to look'. But then I met the little Tanner baby. He's the one.

Born Christmas eve from a Pure Black Lab Daddy and a German Shepherd (Crossed with god knows what) Mama. I pick him up in a few days after he's had quick stop at the Vets.

I've been to see several Dogs and even a few puppies in the last bit that I've been looking but I just didn't find one I felt like I wanted to really build a relationship with.

...and then there was Valentine (Lame name, I know but it just sort of came out.)

So SWEET! I found my Doggie Pal.

Now for the other stuff: Shopping, finding a Vet I like in Toronto and looking into all that fancy stuff like Pet health Insurance and maybe an obedience school.

I can't wait to bring him home and hate on him for poopin on my floor!

Please make it definitely an obedience school. It will do wonders for your dog meeting other dogs as well as people, and it really is a lot of fun. Even if you don't go far with it, go to a puppy class.

Just my $.02.

Have fun with him !
