Default House War III

Hi Everyone

New to the site, just joined today. I'm having a problem with 2 of my dogs.
I have three, 2 males, 1 female, all are fixed. (spayed and neutered) 1 male is about 120lbs and 12 years old, golden retriever mix, female about 50lbs, akita mix, 3 years old, and 1 male approx. 1 year old, about 45 lbs, catahoula mix. No problem with the older male. BUT the female, Cami and Mundy are really confrontational. Mundy is a rescue, showed up at our house, very hungry and desperately looking for a home. For 2-3 weeks he hopped in and out of our yard and seemed to be getting along ok with the other two dogs so I gave in and said ok you found your home. Had him fixed about 2 months ago, micro chipped etc. A few squabbles and one serious fight, but I thought once he was neutered and the hormones lightened up things would be fine. Today it took almost 20 minutes break up the fight. Every time we got them separated they went back at each other immediately with murder in their eyes! All quiet now, but both will have to go to the vet tomorrow. I am wide open to any suggestions as to how to achieve peace in the family???

Hi Momocro Welcome aboard to Df So sorry this happening! Kudos to you for taking in Mundy I would seperate Mundy for now totaly from the rest of the pack other wise you could end up with dead or badly injured dogs it's that serious Can you tell us what the triggers are that set this off and is it Mundy starting these fights off? Last time you said you broke a fight up it took 20 mins you seperated them then it started again. Were they then unsupervised? Is the rest of your pack normaly ok and they don't fight? There are a few options take Mundy to a shelter and fully explain the problems with Mundy he might be better off with some one that has no other dogs in the household! Is he ok with children? Or your get a behaviourist in to evaluate the problems As you can't go on like this! You have to act now Good luck and let us know how you get on! Good luck

Momocro, welcome to the Forum! I'm sure some of the trainers on this forum will be along to try and give you suggestions, and probably have additional questions.

Thanks for the welcome and response. Cami (akita mix) is starting the fights, she is jealous of my husband. But if she starts the fight Mundy is determined to end it. I am retired so I am home 95% of the time, so dogs are supervised. Until Mundy came, no problems. I would have to agree with you, I believe Mundy needs to be rehomed. However...I have grown very attached to him. I believe he would be much better as an only dog in a home. I am willing to give him up to the right home. Sooooo until I can find Mundy's forever home I will just have to be hyper vigilant about stopping the confrontation before it can escalate.
Anybody interested in a great dog?

Have you tried to contact any rescue groups in your area? Where are you located? Maybe we can help.

I live in Jacksonville FL and will be searching rescue groups today. Mundy really is a great dog, housetrained, walks well on lead, not people aggressive (do not know about small children), no cats, he just needs to be the ONLY dog. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't see the jealousy thing why it's your husband that Cami is jealous off and starts a fight can you explain further? So no fights previously to you taking in Mundy then? I still say that keeping Mundy away from your other dogs will help. If you get a behaviourist in to assess the situation and possibly make the situation more harmonious then you may get some where For now you will have to take measures so it doesn't happen again Good luck on what ever you decide!

This is very hard.. You would need to bond the dogs... When inside, crate and rotate and then long walks together.. You would need a behaviorist to change your older dogs emotilnal response to the stimuli so they can see each other as an asset not a threat.. I am right now working with a client with the exact same issue... and it is looooong term training... with slooow progress.. However, once you get there usually the end result is permanent..
